Last Thanksgiving, I made a reservation at Matthew’s 1600 to share a healing meal with loved ones. We had all lost family members, and after losing both of my parents, I wanted to create a space where we could unite in our grief and find a little comfort together.
But the night before, I tested positive for COVID. I did the right thing and called to cancel so I wouldn’t risk anyone else’s health.
Instead of compassion, they charged me $200 for a dinner I never got. No offer to send food home. No credit. No kindness. What was supposed to be a night of healing became another wound. It felt like being stabbed in the back during one of the hardest seasons of my life.
It wasn’t just about the money—it was about how heartless it felt to be treated that way when we were already grieving. After moving back to my childhood home, I now drive past this place almost every day—a restaurant where I once made memories with my parents, and now all I see is disappointment.
This year, as I plan Thanksgiving again, I just want people to know: Matthew’s 1600 had a chance to show compassion, and instead they showed me how little they value community.

Really a lot compassion and care just read a story online about something. They did too an individual that just lost her parents last year and I’m really disheartened by the lack of compassion. These people that are in this restaurant have.

Excellent crab cake however they were far smaller with one crab cake platter. Good veggies. I usually get the crab cake sandwich. My mistake. That crab cake is twice the size!

Went there for lunch with a longtime friend had no idea the restaurant was there. It was absolutely great. The food, the waitress, the atmosphere, I will definitely be going back again. Very, very soon.

We came here for dinner. The food was fine - not great. Son loved his filet mignon. Daughter loved her crab cake. But, wife didn't love her rockfish. And my ribs were fine. Service was great. Atmosphere was just ok. When you walk into the place it has a smell to it, and maybe it was the 95deg temp outside but the inside was a solid upper 70s. Not ideal for dining. The hair in my ribs ruined it for me - the staff were great to replace it. But, eh.

This is the highest quality restaurant in regards to the quality of the product (food) and consistency in preparing and serving it in the area. High integrity in the kitchen and with the catering (in house) offerings. The Admin and Back od House staff has been there a long time - goes to work with integrity, daily. It shows in the finished product.

I’ve only been here once. Stopped for brunch after church. The food was good. Looks like the menu has plenty of options. My friend and I got an omelette and our other friend got waffles. The waitress was attentive and the food was brought out pretty quickly.
Wow. My last visit to Matthews 1600 was when it was Called The Warfside. I brought my mom here on a date. I met some friends here for lunch. Parking was plentiful and the location is easily accessible off of Frederick Road. Yes there are steps to the dining room but there is a main entrance on Frederick Road side where you do not take stairs. Food was delicious and served hot. The creamery pumpkin and butternut squash was to die for. Our waitress, Mikayla was pleasant and friendly. She greeted us with a smile and took great care of all dining needs. I will be returning to this restaurant in the future. Great restaurant for a date night.
