I contacted both the district manager of the Starbucks store and the Howard County Health Department, and it's been confirmed that the disinfectant wipes or wet solution tubs (the type varies by store) used to clean the froth wands contain bleach, among other toxic ingredients. These are approved for cleaning between each milk froth beverage. After I stopped buying hot lattes, my health significantly improved. Choose wisely, patrons.

Subject: Ongoing Health Concern at Starbucks Inside Harris Teeter

I am writing to report a serious and ongoing health concern regarding the cleaning practices at the Starbucks located inside the Harris Teeter store.

Recently, this location began using chemical-treated sanitizing wipes to clean the milk frother steam wand after each beverage preparation, rather than the standard and safer practice of using a clean, wet cloth. Since this change, several individuals—including myself—have experienced symptoms of illness after consuming drinks prepared there.

I brought this concern to the attention of the Harris Teeter assistant manager. She acknowledged that using chemical wipes on a food-contact surface like the steam wand is not safe, assured me they would return to the proper cleaning method, and offered a refund for my coffee. I appreciated her response and her commitment to resolving the issue.

However, just one week later, Starbucks employees were once again using the same sanitizing wipes on the steam wand. In response, I contacted Starbucks Corporate office and requested to speak with the district manager responsible for this location. Additionally, I filed a formal complaint with the Health Department, as this practice may violate food safety regulations and poses a health risk to customers.

I am sharing this to raise awareness and in hopes that the issue will be addressed promptly and appropriately to ensure customer safety.

It’s nice that they tried to add atmousphere by adding a charging station/ sitting area (more like a charging bar), but it’s still not a welcoming Starbucks experience as it’s inside of a bigger store. Not my thing, but I appreciate the effort.

Used to come here everyday sometimes 2x a day. Loved the coffee and staff. Today I went and got a huge attitude when I asked for my order, so I decided to go inside. Once inside met with more disrespectful employees except for one kind one who remembered me. Disappointed because this was my daily coffee break stop and I won't be returning
