One of, if not the best authentic German restaurants in Maine, by far. The Paulaner was cold, and the Spätzle was immaculate. You definitely get what you pay for here!!!

The food and service was excellent. One of the hardest things at Richard’s is trying to decide what to choose off the menu.
The restaurant has a nice German atmosphere, both the decor and music playing in the background.
The service was very attentive, checking in often.
If you like German food, Richard’s is a definite destination objective to be visited. It is one of my favorite go to restaurants in Brunswick.

We drove over an hour with friends to try this restaurant. We did make reservations. The menu online scared me, a but out of my comfort level. But I was pleasantly surprised. The warm pretzels and mustard were delish. I ordered a Dubai chocolate martini. Sooo good. And I got the sampler. Everything on it was delicious. Would recommend.

We have eaten at Richards off and on for 18 years and enjoyed our meals. We always order the wienerschnitzel. This last time, during Octoberfest, the schnitzel was a significant disappointment. There used to be a commercial slogan, Where's the beef? For this schnitzel, I would ask, Where's the pork? I'm not exaggerating when I say that the piece of meat was no more than 1/8-inch thick. I know that schnitzel is a thin cutlet. I've eaten it in many restaurants as well as in Germany and Austria. This was so thin that I felt as though I was just eating breading. My opinion is that this restaurant has gone too far to keep costs down. I noticed that the side servings of spaetzle and red cabbage were also smaller but there was still plenty. The rolls are still absolutely delicious. But the star, the schnitzel, was mostly breading and very little meat. IMHO, it is better for a restaurant to increase the price somewhat and provide the expected delicious meal than to cut back so far as to make the diner feel shortchanged. There are many other options on the menu and I can't speak for those servings, but I would think wienerschnitzel would be a signature entree that they would not choose to downgrade. They could increase some prices and still be quite reasonable compared to most other dining restaurants of their caliber.
Horrible service with waitress who refused to provide name listed server 11. Smart ass comments in regard to an emergency phone call. Never cleared table or even asked if we wanted dessert.

Richard’s Restaurant has been a fixture in downtown Brunswick for decades, offering a taste of authentic German cuisine in the heart of Maine Street. Its half-timbered exterior and welcoming sign make it one of the most recognizable spots in town.
Inside, the menu features hearty classics like schnitzel, bratwurst, and sauerbraten, alongside steins of imported beer. The cozy interior, with dark wood and European décor, adds to the experience, making it feel like a slice of Germany tucked into coastal New England.
More than just a restaurant, Richard’s has become a gathering place for locals, Bowdoin College visitors, and travelers alike. Its longevity speaks to the quality of the food and the warmth of the atmosphere, securing its place as a Brunswick tradition. #brunswickmaine #richardsrestaurant #germancuisine #mainestreet

We opted for something different after a vacation diet focused on seafood. Richard's was unique. The food was interesting and tasty. We got the sampler. The beer was excellent. Our waitress was friendly and informative. A fully successful choice.

If you like German food and German beer, Richards is the place for you. My wife and I had a delicious dinner there. There are lots of choices and the service is exceptional. The decor is also very comfortable and prices are reasonable - add it to your list of places to eat if you are in the area - you will be happy you did.
We always enjoy the potato pancakes we order ahead and the wonderful pretzels and rolls . The German assorted platter delicious !!! Great restaurant and great draft German beers !!
I cannot give a rating because this place is NEVER OPEN. I have never seen a business that is open so infrequently, how are you in business? How do you pay your staff? Or brunswick rent? You're just taking up space on Main street. Seriously. And on the days youre actually open, you only operate for 3 and a half hours? What great business model.
