The dinner and service were outstanding. It was a Wednesday evening and it was very quiet but then we were the only ones there at 7pm.
The food is consistently exceptional and this experience was no different! Our favorite dish is the lamb chop which is always seasoned and cooked to perfection. The wine list is also interesting and it's fun to experiment with new wines. The only complaint we have is that their freshly baked bread is not complimentary nor are traditional salads available. One can order bread with a special dip (for a separate charge) and there are braised vegetables on the menu so these are good substitutions.
Taverna Khione is our favorite restaurant in The midcoast area and one of our favorites in Maine! We love how their menu changes often and every dish we've had has been delicious.
Taverna khione was a nice restaurant with good food. However, I have never been to a restaurant where when asked to split the check and told we don't do that here, well they lost me as a client. I understand when a client asks to have something changed in their plate, or asks for extras and the response is we are not able to do that. But a simple request to give to separate checks and told no, well that's not very good customer service. They obviously have enough customers to make money, so they don't need me.
A true gem off the beaten path. Quality items, thoughtfully created and beautifully presented. The wine list could intimidate if not familiar with Grecian vintners, but recommendations were spot on.
We shared a delicious roasted lamb shank with orzo in a tasty tomato sauce. A perfect dish for a cold February evening. I also had a very good taramasalata appetizer. Our waitress, was just terrific and very cordial, and was quite helpful in providing both of us with a taste of a couple of wines to settle on what we'd like to have. We're already looking forward to our next visit.
a warm and friendly environment with a "neighborhood" feel.. delicious taverna food !
I recently dined at Taverna Khione with a group of friends, but our experience was overshadowed by poor customer service and confusing reservation policies.
We made two separate reservations as a workaround, anticipating that we might have a slightly larger group. Upon arrival, we showed up with 5 people, which, based on their OpenTable listing, should have been acceptable since they advertise parties of 5+ with an extended reservation time. However, the restaurant expressed frustration that we didn’t call to confirm this specific party size in advance, and they ultimately charged us a $100 no-show fee—even though we were present, ate, and paid in full.
Throughout the evening, we were courteous to the staff, and our frustration only surfaced when we learned of the surprise charge after our meal. When we contacted the restaurant afterward to discuss it, they remained firm, citing policies that didn’t match what’s advertised online. The entire issue could have been avoided with clearer communication or some flexibility on their end.
Overall, the food was enjoyable, but Taverna Khione’s rigid and misleading approach to reservations made us feel undervalued as customers. I hope management reconsiders these practices, as we were left with a sour impression of what is otherwise a well-regarded local spot.

TLDR: If you like mediocre Greek food and being treated like a second class citizen, this might just be the place for you. If not, avoid at all costs. Food is overpriced and only okay. The staff are rude and unreasonable. And the atmosphere is cramped with a lovely tinge of hostility. These people think who they are when they very much are not.
Vibes: Bad and broken. Taverna Khione is an exceptionally small restaurant. I say that because it was readily apparent that despite having a reservation, we were not welcomed there by either the restaurant staff or the clientele. Immediately we were greeted by a very rude woman who sat us seemingly against her will. She then proceeded to take approximately ten minutes to return with water for our table despite the fact that we were one of only three parties in the restaurant. Then went a coworker showed up, we asked politely to move over an extra chair so our friend could join us. To this, we were met with a very curt response of “we don’t do that here, you’re going to have to sit at separate tables.” Stunned. After a solid 60 seconds of awkward silence, we complied not knowing what else we were to do. Now I’ve been to restaurants ranging from Michelin Star French dining, to pit bbq shacks on the side of the road and no where has a restraint ever presumed to be that far over their guests that they would split up a cohesive group because another person came into the equation. The audacity that these people showed by placing themselves over the dining experience of their paying customers goes far beyond words. As a restaurant manager myself I would never in a million years expect one of my patrons to do something they didn’t want to do in my establishment. That interaction, mixed with the staffs reluctance to engage us in any and all questions, serve us in a timely fashion, and treat our party with any modicum of respect is indicative of an establishment that truly thinks they are better than everyone else simply because they have the market cornered for Greek cuisine in that particular part of Maine. It is a fallacy for them to assume that because they are the only upscale Greek restaurant that they are also the best Greek restaurant. They are bottom rate at best and should be avoided at all costs. I would recommend that American Express and Opentable conduct investigations into their business practices because they seem like greedy and ill mannered people who only seek to prey off the good graces of tourists and casual passersby.
Food: About on par with the halal food stands in any major city and that’s actually doing those guys a bit of a disservice. I got the braised goat over noodles and found it to be rather bland and under seasoned. While the idea of a braised meat always sounds delightful, I found that the tomato base was far too overpowering to contend with the flavor of the meat and wasn’t complemented well with any additional ingredients. In stark contrast to the bland main course, the dip we got as an appetizer was offensively garlicky that left that greasy garlic taste in our mouths well into the next morning. It was also served with a strange almost soggy, crumbly bread that seemed like it had been left on the counter for a day or two. Additionally, it was readily apparent that this establishment exists solely to run up the margins on their guests as demonstrated by my friend who ordered the lamb chops and would’ve been left with nothing more than a over cooked piece of meat with the consistency of a shower shoe had she not ordered a side for an extra cost. Kinda strange approach to lamb chops but to each their own. The wine selection was nice and thoughtfully arrayed however small likely owing to the fact that it is a small restaurant.

If you miss the arrogance of the Athenians. Then just go to this Greek restaurant in Brunswick, Maine. You will spend $50-$75. Per person for trilogy of tasteless versions of fish, veal, and lamb. To make this expensive culinary tragedy worse is the tragic server who may have flaws other than customer service, and you don’t need only but a few hours to experience cathartic indigestion.

Fantastic! The lemon potatoes, lamb kabobs and Baklava were perfect. Will eat here again when we are back in town. Also love the ambiance.

I can't believe this wasn't on my radar. I've lived adjacent to Brunswick for over six years and only recently heard about this place. It was easily the best meal I've had in the area. I am a chef and although I'm not overly critical when I dine out, I am often not overly impressed either. Taverna exceeded my expectations and we will definitely be back.
Racist owners. Made us (2 Asian customers) sit on the bar stools (I.e., facing away from other people) even though there were tables, and when we asked if we could sit on the table, they said other customers will mind that we were next to them. Then she framed it as “I love ethnic people so I want to speak to you by the bar. And don’t disturb other customers.” But food is good/ok. Would avoid unless you are WHITE

This is a special place off the main street of Brunswick perfect for a date or a small gathering. It's like being in a Greek friend's kitchen. I went three times this summer and each meal with wonderful. Don't miss the zucchini fritters. The wine selection is unique and delicious. Everything is super fresh. Make a reservation and head over!!
