I hadn't been there for years due to my last visit but a friend suggested we get lunch there today. It will be years again if ever. The Reuben was almost all fat but I ate the bread and sauerkraut. This sandwich for $14 comes with chips, I upgraded to sweet potato fries, I wouldn't have had I realized that a handful of cold sweet potato fries were valued at $5, yes $5. I don't understand as Helen's in Machias has never disappointed. Oh well, lesson learned, $50 lunch for two🤣🤣.

We are on a road trip to see the east coast. The reviews were mixed and mostly positive so I thought we should have dinner. We ordered drinks and I had a draft beer and partner had a blueberry margaritas. My beer came right away. Hers didn't arrive until after the dinner was served. The reason you order a drink first is to relax before your dinner arrives. Disappointing. She ordered a lobster roll $32 it was mediocre, again disappointing. I ordered the French onion soup and a side salad. The soup was good not great. The side salad was odd. It came with lettuce and diced tomatoes and cucumbers. How odd, you expect large cuts of vegetables to be able to easily eat and grab. Also, there was no cheese, croutons or red onion. The salad was underwhelming.

.Worst grilled cheese I ever had. Two pieces of dry toast with a slice of cold cheese. Fortunately I added bacon or I wouldn't have been able to swallow it. Desserts looked good, but didn't want to waste anymore money.

Food was lackluster. Portion sizes weren't great. Prices weren't great. The restaurant is echoey. The staff was very friendly.

They don't have whole lobsters. Although it's on the menu as seasonal. Call if you want one or you'll be disappointed. what was troubling was that the waitress said they weren't in season and we wouldn't be able to find them elsewhere. Not true in mid October. Went to bar harbor lobster pound, which was a LOT of fun. Unfortunately went out of our way to try this spot.

Though the pictures show a whole
Lobster, they do NOT have lobster. When we asked and opted to leave, the waitress told us ā€œI don’t know where you are going to find one, lobster is out of season.ā€ First, there is no ā€œlobster seasonā€ and second, lobsters are MOST plentiful in late summer and fall (it’s October). So, lies all around!

This was the third time I have been to Helen’s in Ellsworth in 3 years. The food and service was great the first two years. Each time I have ordered the Lobster roll with butter and a cup of haddock chowder. The first two times both were delicious.

The last time I stopped here yesterday, the lobster roll with butter and the haddock chowder were not as good. The lobster meat in the roll did not taste as fresh and it lacked butter. The haddock chowder was not as creamy and it was missing the flavor like they skipped the seasoning and salt.

It seemed like this time they were cutting corners on the quality of the food. Nevertheless, the service was still friendly and prompt. No wait for a table.

This was the first restaurant we stopped at in our family vacation to Maine. The atmosphere was very much a hometown diner, unorganized front lobby with to gos and no real waiting spot for new patrons trying to get a table. Staff was friendly, food was decent, overall experience was not bad but also note noteworthy.
