I had such a wonderful experience here. The server was super kind, attentive, and went above and beyond for me and my mom. The food was delicious and the environment was lovely. I will be coming again in the future!

Very limited choices on the buffet; I did not have even one item that was hot; most were barely warm, a few were cold. Chicken-on-a-stick and egg rolls were both over cooked, waitress never came by to check on us until it was time to deliver the bill. Maybe we had Great Expectations since China Rose in Brunswick was our go-to place, with Mandarin in Lewiston and Lotus in Auburn being 2nd and 3rd. Will NEVER go back. Very Disappointed.

My human and I pull into the China Rose parking lot. I’m thinking, Finally, a family outing where I will be welcomed inside like the prince I am.
But no.
🚗 The Betrayal
My human utters the cursed phrase:
“I’ll be right back.”
They leave.
They close the door.
They walk toward the glowing red sign that smells like dumplings, destiny, and everything I deserve.
I am left behind with:
- My own breath fogging the window
- A single stale Goldfish cracker under the seat
- And my spiraling thoughts
🪟 The View
I stare out the window like a Victorian orphan longing for a better life.
People walk by carrying takeout bags that smell like pure joy.
Not one of them offers me a scallion pancake.
I press my nose to the glass.
No one acknowledges my suffering.
🕰️ Time Dilation
My human claims they were gone “a few minutes.”
Incorrect.
It was four eras, two dog reincarnations, and at least one full moon cycle.
🐕 Environmental Conditions
- Temperature: Fine, but I am choosing to act like it was extreme
- Music: Acceptable, but not curated for my emotional state
- Window crack: 1 inch, which is basically imprisonment
- Emotional support: Zero
🍜 The Smells
The worst part?
The air fills with the scent of fried rice, garlic, and sweet‑and‑sour bliss drifting from the restaurant.
I can smell every ingredient.
I can taste none of them.
This is psychological warfare.
🧍♂️ My Human’s Return
They return cheerful, holding a warm bag.
They say, “Hey buddy!”
I say nothing.
I give them the slow blink of betrayal.
They offer me a sniff of the bag.
I accept, but only because I am weak.
🐾 Final Verdict
China Rose food: 5 stars (based on smell alone)
China Rose experience from the car: 2 stars
Being left behind: -400 stars
Would I go again? Yes.
Would I guilt‑trip my human the entire ride home? Absolutely.

Calm cozy atmosphere. Food is good for price and definitely has value. But the service when dealing with the waitresses / waiters are either all in or they ignore you for an extended period of time. Which is saying something because they see you when you come in and you have to walk past them all walking through the door. But they are fairly friendly and try to be considerate.

Food was good.. wasn't for the buffet minimal selection. They try to let items deplete so try to get there at least an hour before that ends. All good food good people..

Never had a bad experience here- it's clean staff is nice and the price is only 12.99 love this place!!
Quite little place but very limited selections on the buffet. Only one cart of food and one of desserts. It makes ordering the buffet not worth it. Not even any chicken fingers!! Price was reasonable.

The food was fine. Service was incredibly slow. We’ve been there two times for dine-in, but not likely to return, due to service.

Excellent food at reasonable prices. We order items across the menu and nothing disappointed. We were with a large group, and they were very accommodating with all their food allergies. The service was great - everyone so pleasant and accommodating even as it was nearing closing time. Would recommend to anyone visiting Freeport.
I had called ahead asking how much the dinner buffet was. When I get there, I see that the buffet tables are down and that they are handing out menus. I ask what’s going on and they say that there’s only buffet for lunch so I’d had to drive what would’ve been a 30 minute drive from home to a 45 minute drive from this restaurant to go to a different place if they would’ve told me that it was buffet dinner on the phone. It would’ve saved me a trip
