I visited this restaurant a few weeks ago and I've been bothered ever since. Just wanted to try the Eggs Benedict as it was recommended by a friend. And as promised, it was amazing!! The service was great too! Efficient and pleasant!!
The reason for the one star was the atmosphere. I was only in there for less than 40 minutes and I could not believe how loud the kitchen was and how verbally abusive and nasty they are to their wait staff. Absolutely blew my mind! There was a woman yelling and cursing at the servers out back. I couldn't believe it and I couldn't believe no one said anything. I've asked around since and apparently this is an ongoing thing. Oddly enough there's a Confederate flag carved into one of the chairs but that's just a random observation. I don't know how anyone can go in there and enjoy a wonderful breakfast with incredible staff only to hear them being berated in the back. It's absolutely disgusting!
If I do venture back in there, and hear the same thing, I will say something!!

I have driven by the Sunrise Cafe 100 times but never went in because a wasn’t excited by the curb appeal. But, you know what they say: “never judge a book by its cover…” and I am so glad I came in today because WOW did I find a hidden gem. My waitress, Brittany, was an absolute joy! The food was fantastic… it wasn’t greasy… on the contrary, everything was fresh (the berries were perfect and the corned beef hash is “world famous” for a reason). Special requests: no problem. I will absolutely be back here and looking for Brittany again (although I presume all the staff are great)! Glad to say that I just found my new favorite breakfast spot in Freeport, Maine!

Cute breakfast cafe with delicious breakfast
the classic two eggs hash browns with sourdough toast breakfast was delicious and the California eggs Benedict too. The raspberry muffin toasted was a treat.

This probably isn't going to be a fair review because I'm comparing them to a much better place down the road. I stopped in here because the Freeport Cafe was lined up out the door, and there's a reason for that. The food here was OK, but the portion sizes were a bit small for the price. It wasn't as tasty either, or as filling. I don't usually care about the decor, but the Freeport Cafe blows them away here too, also nice views of the marsh and surroundings. I'm glad I tried something different, but I should have waited for a seat at the Freeport Cafe instead. All that being said, if I were to between here and McDonald's, I would choose here.

You get a lot of very good food at a very good price. Our first time there. Breakfast only during weekends "Honey" the waitress said to my wife. (She had ordered a Reuben). She had the veggie omelette and I had The Sunrise, which came with three eggs (I chose scrambled) Boston baked beans, hash browns or home fries (I chose hash browns), toast(2) (I chose marble rye and so did my wife), and corned beef hash. Everything was quite good. I would eat here again. Everything was flavorful, the toast was buttered, and nothing was over-seasoned, and there was plenty of everything. Butter, jams, and jellies on the table. Tables and chairs. This place is probably full at peak times. One TV screen. Alongside Route 1 just south of Freeport. Enough parking for the number of tables (12?). The arrival of the food didn't take long. The waitresses were a little too...familiar. My said "unpolished", but not a deal breaker.

Service was so unwelcoming. Confederate flag on a chair. Server was incredibly rude (specifically to a child). Walked out. Can’t support this type of establishment. Would rate 0 if possible. Run far far away.

It’s a Maine breakfast place, a “want more coffee hun” service. My kind of place. Eggs toast greasy home fries toast slice of ham.
