Tonight we had pulled pork, fried wings, chicken tenders with macaroni and cheese. Everyone said it was the best BBQ they have ever tasted! That sauce is amazing and goes great with the seasoned fries.

Candied BBQ I was in Battle Creek, MI just before the 4th of July and interested in trying the flavor of a local BBQ. I had already tried Hogzilla on a prior visit a couple years back. My Google navigator actually pinpointed two locations. Since the southern location was closest, I went there first. That location was just a food truck in a gravel parking lot. It wasn't open... not because I arrived outside of business hours-- it was really closed. Perhaps there is a season when it is open. I navigated to the other location, and it was open. Patrons were moving in and out, but it wasn't busy. The menu was on a wall to the right of the counter. I studied the options looking for some combination that would help me make an apples-to-apples comparison with other BBQ shops I've dined at. I found a pulled pork sandwich with fries. I picked baked beans for a side, but can't remember if I had to order the beans ala carte or they came with the combo-- the final price was reasonable, so it must have been included. A super friendly young lady was running the front of the store and some banging noises from the back told me a cook or two were also there. I made my order and was told there would be a wait to prepare my fries fresh. I wasn't going to complain! The shop is one of those locations where everything you see is shouting "local mom and pop". Nothing appeared franchisey in any way. No decorations stand out in my memory, very plain, rough spots here and there, but clean enough to dispel safety fears. I was handed a bag with my fries and pulled pork sandwich in a white styrofoam clamshell. The baked beans were also in styrofoam under a lid. The food smelled great and I was a hungry bear who couldn't wait to get the meal home. I started in with the fries while driving-- excellent. I tried to eat the pork sandwich, but too much meat and bbq sauce was falling out everywhere. I arrived home (to my hotel room), still having a few fries left. I spread out a napkin and started in on the pork. The first thing I noticed was the BBQ sauce is so sweet it almost ruined the meal for me. I like saucy BBQ sauce, but candied BBQ sauce is gross. The pork was tender, pulled right and smokey so I suffered through the sugar buzz I was getting and finished off the sandwich. Honestly, it was tough because I was really starting to gag on the sweetness. The thought crossed my mind to go back the next day and try again, asking servers to omit the BBQ sauce so could better judge the meat. I'm also used to either a peppery or fiery kick to my BBQ sauce, but this had no flame-- just that overpowering sugar. The sandwich and fries filled me up but I so l-o-v-e baked beans. The lid was off and a flash and the first bite was in my mouth before I realized that these too were candied. The same sickeningly sweet BBQ sauce was a key ingredient in the baked beans. I did finished them, but only because I was taught as a child to clean my plate. I can sorta recommend trying OT's Up-N Smoke BBQ, but I would highly advise skipping the baked beans and asking for the sauce on the side so you can apply the corn syrup to your meal in a proportion that suits your taste.
