Red Mesa was my go to place since it opened. At least 3 times a month, friends and I would go. The new menu and management has us finding other places. My two favorite things were the pork burrito and the 1 ancho chicken taco that came with beans and rice. I’m not a huge eater, so that was perfect for me. Now they only have a dinner portion of chicken tacos on the menu with corn and sauce. They now charge for chips and salsa, which is wild work. At least make the first one free. $16 for a cheese quesadilla? C’mon now. I miss the days when Patti was there and the restaurant was good. I don’t think it was broke, so why did they make all of these changes? Oh, and the menu is a ridiculous layout. I think a child must’ve designed that. I’m just so sad that my former favorite restaurant isn’t even in my rotation anymore.

Edit: Red Mesa messed up big time. They changed their menu and the fish tacos were included in that change. Not near as good as they were. Why restaurants always feel the need to fix what’s not broken is beyond me. We made the trip from petoskey to boyne city for the sole purpose of eating fish tacos at Red Mesa. My wife was crushed when they brought them to our table. No more cabbage slaw and fried fish. Now it’s a small piece of grilled fish with some mango salsa. Very bland, not much flavor. To add insult to injury, the complimentary chips and salsa went by the wayside as well. No more. Needless to say, sadly our annual trip up north every August won’t be including a trip to Red Mesa. They had a good thing but like they say. “All good things must come to an end.
Fish Tacos I’ve ever had. We aways make a point to stop and have dinner at red mead when we camp Nextdoor at the state park. Last year we camped in Petoskey and made the trip to Their Boone City location. Fish tacos didn’t disappoint.

BEWARE. They charged $1 for a drinking straw, $2.99 for chips and salsa. After we told them we didn't want an appetizer he then asked if we wanted chips and salsa while we waited. Then they charged us for them. Scam.

Always a great experience with quality food. All of the Magnum hospitality restaurants are good, but I especially love Red Mesa.
Recommended dishes: Quesadilla, Pork Flautas
We had to pay for chips and salsa!!! Even mom and pop Mexican restaurants give this for free. Menu has reduced to nothing. Service very slow two tables and meal was 35 minutes coming out! Very disappointed

*Not Recommend* *Updated Review 2025* *Disgusting Chewy Grisel Meat* *No More Complimentary Chips & Salsa* Since over 20yrs ago this place had been the best restaurant in Boyne City however since the previous owner sold this establishment it's gone downhill BIG time. As always I visited & was looking forward to a delicious Brazilian Skirt Stake dinner only left to be very disappointed in the Meat which was absolutely disgusting/uneatable I tried so hard to eat it and kept thinking to myself is this real Meat? 🤮 Again this really is upsetting to see such an amazing restaurant that has for so long been apart of the community go downhill. *pictures from 2021 the food was still good then*

I want to say the service is fantastic and then I want to note the changes in the last year have been absolutely horrid. first off starting with charging for chips and dip and then I pick up the menu and I have to turn and turn and turn and flip and turn and turn and turn to see the whole thing, whoever designed that menu obviously has never looked at a menu a day in their lives. then I ordered birria I didn't know it was a build my own tacos if I had known that I would have ordered something else I didn't come here to build my own tacos or else I would have eaten at home if that were the case. and then who changed the rice and the beans because you guys had the best rice and beans and now they're Bland disgusting plain white rice, plain black beans I'm really disappointed in the new changes.
We visit Boyne City every summer and I always like to dine at Red Mesa at least one time while we are in town. This year something seemed quite different than it the past. Food and service were just average and they stopped with the free chips and salsa. Not sure what happened to the menu, but the variety of options are not nearly as good as they used to be. The place seemed deserted on a Thursday evening and now I know why............

The food was great!
Our service was horrific. Stephanie D. She was rude. Left us waiting for long periods before coming to the table, from start to finish. She was only decent when she sat down the check and told us to have a good night, shocker, she wanted one last chance for a decent tip. She charged us for something she told us about and didn't tell us it was extra- (a dipping sauce, like a smokey tomato type sauce) she was awful the entire experiance- including the end when she tried to balance 2 tables leaving at the same time, we stacked our plates and put at end, she took the other tables dirty dishes and stacked them on our table to take both stacks back together. So gross.
They had the door propped open because it was such a beautiful day out, however we spent most the visit swatting flies off our food. That was definitely annoying and again, gross.
But as a whole, will be back, hopefully w another server, food was very good!
And good music was being played overhead too!
