On July 25 of this year my wife and I wanted to go somewhere and celebrate our 3rd wedding anniversary. We looked at so many restaurants! We wanted something that had a wonderful ambiance, great food, and some really great service! We also wanted something a tad more refined. Being that I’m not from Detroit I wanted to defer to my wife since she is and knows the lay of the land but…because it was our wedding anniversary she wanted me to take the lead and find somewhere special for us to dine. After a few weeks I settled on J. Baldwins. I think what sold me was when I called to make reservations and spoke with the most delightful young lady. She was incredibly patient, knowledgeable, and accommodating. I have a bit of a disability and she more than assured me I’d be just fine. Well the day was here and we set out to celebrate! When we arrived several staff members greeted us as if they’d known us for years! They had our table set up just like they promised they would and…if was even decorated with some romantic things to make this night very special for my wife and I! The atmosphere was elegant but also laid back. The music was great and my wife looked amazing!! I was in Heaven! I should tell you I’m a big guy and I was worried about the level of comfort but again they made me very uncomfortable! So if you’re a bigger person or plus size I promise you’ll be able to be comfortable!!! Anyway…we ordered the mini crab cakes as an appetizer and they were ABSOLUTELY FIRE! My wife had the lamb chops for her entree while I had the fish n chips! (I know…don’t judge me) Everything was delicious! The staff checked on us constantly to make sure we were having a pleasant experience and we certainly were!!! That focaccia bread though!!! Thx me later!! The prices were slightly elevated but in my opinion very reasonable for what you’re going to get! We had such a great experience that we went back again the very next evening! Guess what??? It was AMAZING all over again! It wasn’t a fluke! Since then we’ve been back about 3 more times, most recently tonight (11/8/25). Everyone knows us now and they treated us royally! I wanted to write this review for the restaurant because we feel everyone just go and try these folks out! Tell them we sent you. We have never left there dissatisfied! NOT ONCE!!! If you’re looking for a great place to take your lady on a very refined and sophisticated dinner date…go visit J Baldwins on 18 Mile & Hayes in Clinton Township!

Thank you Calvin, you are a spectacular server and you did a fantastic job for the engagement party that came in on 10/26. Absolutely the best calamari I've ever had. Blackened swordfish was superb. Excellent dining experience!

We decided to try this restaurant for the first time after returning from our anniversary trip and wanted somewhere nearby for dinner. I made a reservation earlier that day and received both a confirmation and reminder text. When we arrived, the host couldn’t locate our reservation at first, but after I showed the confirmation, he seated us right away. I was a little let down since I had mentioned it was our anniversary in the notes—it would have been nice if the table had been prepared with something special for the occasion.
Once we were seated, our waitress turned things around with her kindness. After learning it was our anniversary, she brought over a rose and a card wishing us a happy celebration. While looking through the menu, we realized it didn’t include the dishes we’d been craving, but that was on me for not checking ahead. We decided to try the beef tips instead, and they turned out to be excellent—flavorful, tender, and perfectly seasoned. Our waitress was attentive, polite, and made sure we were taken care of throughout the meal.
We originally planned to take our dessert to go, but she insisted on bringing out the carrot cake first so she could decorate the plate with a “Happy Anniversary” message before boxing it up. It was such a sweet and thoughtful gesture that really made us feel appreciated.
Overall, while the atmosphere didn’t quite match what I expected for an anniversary dinner—I definitely felt overdressed—the food and service were outstanding. I’ll absolutely come back again, maybe dressed a little more casually, to enjoy another great meal and the wonderful hospitality.

Our meal began with a remarkable calamari appetizer that was so tender it practically melted in our mouths. The main course was a perfectly cooked duck with wonderfully crispy skin, complemented by a stellar marmalade sauce. The mushroom risotto was expertly executed. Unfortunately, the Caesar salad was a let down, it was only oil, nothing else for a dressing.
$52 homecoming special for chicken, bread, salad and drink. Nice way to rip of teenagers. Waiter was rude to these young ladies.

Came for our anniversary and was very pleased. Started with calamari and the special app they had tonight of warmed Brie and bread. Main dish husband had wagyu meatloaf and then I ordered the fig truffle pizza along with truffle Parmesan fries to share. The portions were very generous, food was delicious and obviously had some leftovers. My only gripe would be to spread out the goat cheese on the pizza. I really feel like it was all concentrated to the middle and not the rest of the pizza. However, overall it was amazingly delicious and we will be returning.
