I hadn't been in a couple of years and was disappointed that they didn't accept credit cards as payment! I rarely carry cash so I was in panic mode after driving quite a distance with a friend. Luckily my friend had enough money to pay my bill too! So embarrassing! I found the quality of their food wasn't as good as it was previously! This used to be my family's go to restaurant since the 90s. This will be my last after this past weekend!

Our waitress had a very pleasant personality. I asked a question about their sunflower bread and she went to the kitchen to get the answer for me.
The food portions were large and a good price.
The meal was absolutely delicious. It has been the best vegetarian omelet I've had so far, especially since I had a choice of cheese to have in it.

Limited hours and cash/check only are the only downsides— it often gets quite busy. The homefries, biscuits and pies are exceptional. Definitely a great breakfast/lunch spot.

I drove by this place a few weeks ago and noticed people lined up. Looked them up and saw the good reviews. Got there this morning right when they opened. I don't get the love for this place. It was clean but very tired looking. My server was very kind and the others appeared that way too. I ordered the biscuits and gravy plus one pancake. The pancake was pretty bland and must be from a box mix. Super thick syrup that was likely generic Sysco or Gordon's. The biscuits were decent but the gravy was a thick flavorless sludge. When you get overly white gravy then you know it's not likely to be good. Plenty of sausage but no flavor. I think the gravy was straight flour and water with maybe a little vegetable oil. No butter or rendered sausage fat along with no spices = no flavor.

Check the photos for current menu prices, not the menu link tab. The menu link tab on this page we're when the prices were reasonable. They are hyperinflated from the old prices. $8+ for just eggs, toast, and 3 bacon ($3.10 extra if you want home fries). I have eaten all over the country, and Kates is average at best and does not substantiate these higher than average prices. We likely won't be back as there are better local options at more reasonable pricing.
