RUDE FROM THE MOMENT WE PULLED IN THE PARKING LOT! I told them I had a gluten and dairy (milk) allergy - they suggested the over easy eggs with meat and hash browns. I told them to give my husband the toast that came with the meal. The dish came out with toast on my plate touching other food. Owner was very rude when I told her I couldn’t have it now - she said I should have said that I was HIGHLY allergic to gluten so then they would have known to keep it off the plate!! I TOLD THEM TO GIVE IT TO MY HUSBAND!! ALso, as I was eating my eggs and hash browns I could taste butter!! When I asked if they used butter - the answer was well yes we do!! UNBELIEVABLE!!

Really nice Diner, great for a home cooked breakfast any day of the week! Fantastic friendly service with a smile and warm filling food prepared quickly for a dine in or take out! Enjoy their lovely pastries and baked goods with your morning coffee or stop in for a super lunch sandwich! Limited indoor seating with overflow seating on covered porch! Thank you Bird and Bear Café! ?

Every village, town or city has that one special place, the warm fuzzy kinda place that just says “ you are welcomed here”, and that is the Bird and the Bear. Maybe it is their willingness to have gluten free food, maybe it is their salads or out of this world baked goods, maybe it is their amazing staff ( counter help, owner or dishwasher), but whatever it is, it keeps you coming back for more. From the moment you walk into the shop and are overtaken by the aroma of sweetness, followed by smiles by all of the staff and your journey is rounded out by a genuine thank you and appreciation for your patronage, you know you have found your newest happy place!

Mom and I were heading for brunch to another place til we discovered it is closed on Mondays and Wednesdays. Guess I should have checked first--but who closes on Wednesdays. Anyway The Bird and The Bear lucked out since we were hungry. This was our first time at the "former Au Sable Bakery" location. We were in heaven the minute we walked in the door. Got there in time to have breakfast. The menu has a nice "simple" variety. I had the "MIT" Muffin which was delicious. Tons of spinach and lots of fluffy scrambled eggs. Mom had the biscuit & sausage with egg--thought she was gonna keel over when she saw the large serving. With her there's always a doggie bag. The coffee is very good. Oh yeah and everything was piping hot. We sat outside which is really nice except for the Village traffic on 5th St. The outside booths could be a little more comfortable, but it was nice and shaded under the awning. The service is excellent. The staff is friendly. Like many local small businesses they prefer cash payment. Those darn credit card financial institutions trying to get rich off the backs of small business. It'll be a longtime before rural communities become cashless. Most city folk who come Up North know to carry cash--I think. Well at least I do--I am mother trained. Hee hee!Let's not forget about the delectable cinnamon roll. OMG! So freaking good!!!! I bought a few items to take home a couple dips, peanut butter cookies, and a loaf of pumpernickel bread. You're gonna have to wait for an update on those since I'm too full from breakfast to try them right now.UPDATE: Finally tried all the items I bought to take home. Spinach dip tasted very close to Mom's. It has water chestnuts for a nice little crunch. They call me the crunch girl--ok not really but I made you laugh. If you like feta the Cherry feta dip is a nice switch in dips. You can taste the cherry. The pumpernickel bread is dark, soft and excellent as toast. Most store bakery pumpernickels are cut too thin, lose their softness when toasted, and tend to dry up fast. Only drawback to The Bird and the Bear is keeping it in the fridge to prevent mold. I usually separate my loaves of bread into 4-5 slice pkgs and freeze them. That way I can have a couple days of bread available without wasting a whole loaf to mold.Lastly, the peanut butter cookies. Yum yum. If you are peanut lover these cookies are for you. They are packed with peanuts and peanut butter flavor. Thick, chewy, with a hint of crunch. Mom and I usually share one cookie. Mom said she eyed some of the other flavors so I see more cookies in my future.

Closed... what's good but the pandemic closed this place down it is now North Winds Pizza. The pizza crust at the new place is fantastic! The sauce was good I don't think it's homemade but it's clearly doctored and taste good toppings were good and the pizza was just cooked to perfection. I also ordered an Italian Grindr with french fries. That was not nearly as impressive the fries were very Bland and the meat used on the grinder was clearly Frozen it was still prepared well but it was really Bland overall didn't have much flavor. On the way out I decided to get some cannolis. What can I say, WOW!!! Took a few minutes to get out to the table but it was worth the wait they were actually fantastic beyond belief . As far as the staff very very friendly and service was fast and they accepted feedback and were very generous in every way . I definitely will go back to the pizza place again for pizza and dessert.

My every time we're at Higgins stop. Coffee is delish. Bakery is wonderful. Haven't tried the new location yet but look forward to it soon and love what they did with the original. Always find something I didn't know I needed.
