The New Moon Coffeehouse and Eatery proves you can find good food even in a small, isolated town. (That isn't a dig at Baudette, it's just reality. This is a small town on the Canadian border.)The New Moon is one of the best places in town, and it would hold its own in any city or community. It has a relaxed, sophisticated decor that feels right in a county defined by one of the nation's largest lakes.It's a popular gathering place for locals and the town's leaders. If you live here, you can't walk into this place without running into your neighbors and friends. And for visitors from both sides of the border, it's a great place to grab something to eat.The food, which the owners often put their own spin on, is always good. I have yet to eat something here I don't like.My favorite dishes include the Loaded Avocado Bagel, Gyro Wrap, South of the Border Salad and the Yodeling Turkey Panini. Each time I look over the menu, I discover something new. Like today, I just discovered they serve London Fog tea.They serve breakfast and lunch. Menu items include paninis, sandwiches, bagels, pastries, wraps, salads, non-alcoholic speciality drinks (hot, iced and blended), smoothies (in season) and moreThe New Moon is owned by local women who all grew up in Lake of the Woods County. They opened it in 2020 because they missed The Smiling Moon, a popular coffee spot that closed a few years ago.If you look around the New Moon today, you'll see subtle references to the former coffee shop besides its name. One is a sign from The Smiling Moon that's hanging from the ceiling. Another is the "The Leap of Faith" salad on their menu.(Note: I'm a journalist who has lived in Baudette for a couple of years. This is my honest opinion. No one paid or asked me to write this review.)
