This is a late, but long overdue review. We had been buying meat from a farmer who has since stopped running their operations (a family member passed and they were unable to keep up their operations). The meat they sold us was the best we had ever had and they were taking extra steps to keep their cows free from any pesticides and given them a supplement of microgreens. Their meat had a wonderful and unique flavor that was consistent over the months (almost a full year buying from them), it was so distinct from other meat we’ve had. We decided to invest in a half cow from them, they went with Powell to process the meat.
On the drive down we happened to check the reviews and we noticed many other reviews stating they had issues with their meat (meat that couldn’t be their meat, meat that was old, meat that had a smell they could taste, meat that had a lower yield than what they paid for). We got worried, called the farmer, he told us he had heard similar complaints from locals, but he personally hasn’t seen that issue and they were one of the more affordable meat lockers. Once we got home and started cooking the meat it was obvious this was not the same meat quality we had been getting from the farmer. I will echo some of the other reviews, it’s like the stench from the locker carries into the meat. And when I say carried I mean it overpowers the meat. My husband was incredibly disappointed. We’ve had meat from a variety of farmers in the area and this just tasted bad. Unfortunately when we tried to contact the farmer about the meat quality (we were going to let him try it himself as we were so convinced this couldn’t be from their herd, it was so drastically different in the color, the taste, the texture, etc) they were beginning to go through their family health challenges. Maybe this is a great place to eat, but I would read other reviews carefully about the meat processing aspect.
Also they messed up the order when we picked it up. They had given some cuts that we paid for to the other individual who got the other half of the cow. Fortunately the farmer was able to give us that persons information and we were able to meet up with them to get our meats. I have no way of proving this, but either the meat we received was not from the farmer and it was swapped out for a lesser quality or they don’t clean their machines/sanitation is off because it ruined all of our meat.
Cow butchered and didn't receive my cow back got someone else's meat
Guess they don't know the difference between a processing fee and a deposit. Don't understand what they call a processing fee when the deer is already skinned and quartered and was not told that there would be a processing fee but told it was a deposit when dropping off the deer. And one more thing, their jerky-flavored or original taste like burnt cardboard. It's overcooked or should I say just burnt. Couldn't chew the stuff, wife just trashed the crap. Also took nearly 3 months to get my deer meat back. Their summer sausage, snack sticks breakfast sausage nothing to shout about, had better. Nope, first and last time!!!
The quality of meat was definitely below par. I expect to see more marbling and have a tender cut of meat when I go to a butcher. I would say the freshness is better than Walmart, but Walmart has better marbling and tenderness. That’s saying something, as I do not like Walmart meat.
With competitors in the area having doing so much better, you would expect they would up their game.
Come here for their high quality beef and pork selection. I shop for my meat exclusively at Powell's and have been doing so for years now. It's worth the hour drive.
The best pulled pork nachos I have ever had. They made the pulled pork fresh before putting it on my nachos. Plus a big portion. My husband had the Rodeo burger and he also said it was one of the best burgers he has had in a long time. Will definitely be going back again.
Not just a butcher shop. They also serve hot food that is really good as well. Prices are a bit higher than Walmart or your local grocery story, but your paying for a premium cut of meat and its worth it.
Had 2 deer processed here and took to me an excessively long time. I typically take my deer to other places or process it myself. But the weather was a bit warmer this year and I had a 2 hour drive to get the deer back home.
I did not pick the deer up myself when they were done. I had a friend that is in the area pick them up so I didn’t have to make the drive. When I received the first deer it was just over a month after dropping it off. The 2nd deer was another month after. When I got the 2nd deer back the price was double what the first one was and the meat that received didn’t add up. On top of that some of the meat was freezer burnt and the vacuum sealed packaging wasn’t even vacuum sealed. Some of the meat I’m not even sure is good anymore.
I paid to have the deer caped so I could get it mounted but it was left out and rotted and ruined the cape. Now I had to spend another $275 on a new cape to have my deer mounted or not get it mounted. Very frustrating considering this was my first deer taken in the area I went. Now I don’t get my deer cape I have to use a complete different deer with the antlers.
I called to talk with the manager and was given the owners voicemail and I still have not received a phone call back. I have made the drive and recommended others to make the drive to purchase meats from here many times. I buy steaks every Father’s Day from here for friends and family. I think now I will just shop at other places instead.
Love this place for all the beef needs plus more !
Always clean, friendly and helpful. Have enjoyed our meat we've purchased from them.

Great customer service, friendly. Liked the fresh not frozen option.
My mother called in and placed an order. She called in 4 days ahead and placed the order. We stopped in 1 day early. I told the lady at the counter that we were a day but in the area and wanted to see if by chance that the order was ready. She went to the back and came back and said it wasn't ready but they were working on it. We stopped by the following day. We were now informed that there wasn't any order ready or record of our order.
I raised this from a 1 start to a 3 star. The manager called and apologized. He wanted to make it right. He rushed a new order, and it was ready the next day. It was the best-looking "fresh side pork" that I've seen. The review would have been a 4 or 5 if this order had been correct the 1st time.
I took a deer there to get processed and theres no way I got back my deer I took there. I took a big doe there and looked like I got back bambi and it also took them a little over a month to get it done. I'll never go back, I was not impressed
Great selection of different cuts of meat that I can't get at the store and the food that is made there is great my favorite is the pulled pork nachos or the jalapeno popper burger. The customer service is great and friendly...
We brought clients to Clinton for a production that required a lot of food- at odd ball times. Travis and the guys stepped up and saved the day with the most excellent breakfast lunch and dinners. The meals were excellent and service unbelievable. So thankful for these guys and what they do. I’d give them 10 stars if I could. Thank you Powell Meat!
