What drew up to this place were reviews that said it served buffalo fish. I had not eaten buffalo since I was a child and was eager to relive the experience. They were doing take-out only because of Covid. We ordered at the window with a charming congenial lady. She described the portions as quite large so we only got one order of the fried boneless buffalo and a couple of side. You can order it on the bone also. The meal, which was plenty for both of us, was $11! Everything was delicious! The fish was perfect, crunchy on the outside, flaky and moist inside, and not at all greasy. The potato salad was very good too. I highly recommend this place.
Truth be told, I never had heard of a Buffalo fish before I read the menu at 61 Fish Market and Restaurant in Port Gibson, Mississippi. Located at 1113 Highway 61 in what General Ulysses S. Grant said was a town that was "too beautiful to burn," the Fish Market attracts hungry customers from far and wide with fresh and delicious catfish, Buffalo and pantrout with sides of baked beans, French fries, hush puppies, potato salad and Okra. So what is a smallmouth Buffalo? It is the No. 1 commercial freshwater fish caught in the United States. It is commonly caught in the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers. It can reach 30 inches long and 35 pounds but is more commonly found at sizes of 16 to 22 inches long and five to 10 pounds. It is highly valued by commercial fishermen as a food fish. Once you've tried it, you'll agree. The meat is white and flakey and its taste reminds of grouper, Chilean sea bass, Branzino, whitefish and mahi-mahi. I'm not into catfish but Buffalo is the most pleasant eating discovery I've enjoyed since I became acquainted with Branzino at a Florida restaurant five years ago.
Great customer service & food.
