I'd originally hoped to book a table at Buffalo Block for our final night in town, but even back in July there was no availability—which says a lot about the place. We came earlier instead and weren't disappointed. Rare New York Strip, a bottle of Cabernet Franc from Chinon, and quiet conversation under vaulted beams and brick archways. The building dates to 1910—when Theodore Roosevelt had just left office, the Titanic was still under construction, and much of the region was gravel roads and boardwalks. You can feel that history in the space itself, layered under modern touches like linen napkins, French wine, and a perfectly cooked wood-fired steak. The food was exceptional, but it's the setting that lingers. Toward the end of the meal, we learned the restaurant is closing on August 30. Sad news—for a place this well-run, it's a genuine loss.
We had a great evening at the Buffalo Block. Food and service was amazing and the ambiance is like nothing else you can find in the area!
This was like dining on the Officer's Deck on the Titanic knowing Buffalo Block was closing on 30 August. The entire state of Montana has not "great" restaurant...so, we will miss Buffalo Block. Daniel was our waiter, from LA, a gentleman and excellent concierge through our meal. There were five; the sixth will be sad she missed this event. We met the pastry chef because she was working tables with the lack of staff. Oysters on the half shell, a dozen, were perfect as was the escargot, although I have never had it with Mozzarella... One person had the French Onion Soup...We all laughed about how "you can't get this at McDonald's." Bread rolls were delish. Steaks, chicken, scallops, and crab...sumptuous...and yes, we ordered the Baked Alaska...perfect for five with five spoons... There is no other restaurant in the State that is (was) as good and we will fondly remember Buffalo Block. Special mention...Originally, I made a reservation for 3...but then three other decided to attend. The lady who took reservations told me that it was impossible, fully booked. But I talked to the manager and was accommodated. The restaurant was busy, but not "fully booked." Brilliant evening...
Unfortunately our experience was not great. We had our kids with us and they were willing to try the food, but with a burger order we got the impression it was too fancy to ask for a plain burger. After over an hour wait for our food with no updates from our waiter(who was frequently visiting other nearby tables with updates and appetizers) we started to get impatient. Once the food arrived after an hour and a half the “plain” as can be burger was overcooked and dry. The other meals were just ok. We were not impressed unfortunately but were able to use our gift cards before the close.
We dined outside. Lovely area. Food was exceptional. Portions were huge and could easily have been split.
We had a great experience, the waiter at the table we sweet, kind & Patient. We had great conversations where we ate dinner. We will definitely return.
Celebrated a 50th anniversary here. Had the pork chops, surf and turf with scallops and king crab as well as the prime rib. Everything was perfectly cooked. You can tell a lot of thought goes into to the cooking. All of the dishes were paired perfectly. Our server was amazing at making the night special for the couple. We have seen a few reviews say that the value is not there however our entire table was in agreement that the value was spot on!
Food was good, but the waiter never asked for the size of the meat, and of course, he brought the biggest one. My husband asked for a glass of wine and he brought a bottle. We were on a business meeting, and we couldn't, for respect, tell the waiter to return the food. We ended up with a $300 bill.
Upscale ambiance with options of seating inside and outside. There is a delicious smoky aroma about the establishment which reflects the wonderful food being prepared. We had great service, comfortable seats, excellent cocktails and wine. We ordered the croquettes as an appetizer and they were delicious. The steaks were all delicious--we tried the prime rib, the rib eye and the filet. The sides tend to be "shareable" in size--a couple could order one of the larger steaks with sides and share everything for a full meal. We had the baked alaskan dessert. It is done in a unique way--ice cream enveloped in a perfect meringue on top of a very nice brownie. There is a parking lot for this establishment. I recommend this restaurant when you want to have a fine meal.
My favorite fine dining in Billings. You can't beat the service and the food is excellent. It's hard to cook a steak medium well and have it turn out perfectly. But they do it every time.

Beautiful restaurant, well trained staff, delicious food. Other places in Billings that were recommended to us do not even come close to the experience at Buffalo Block.
We had dined at Buffalo Block after it opened and found the prices ridiculously high. With some advice from a friend regarding splitting every plate, we tried it again. The prices are much more reasonable and the portions so large that sharing is the only way to go! We had the steak special with a wonderful chimmy churrie, garlic mashed potatoes, house salad, and Brussel sprouts. Our servers were exceptional! We had a wonderful dinner and lovely experience! We will be back!
Sarah was fantastic and added so much to our great dinner. The food was amazing, unique and plentiful! Highly recommend the pork chops, fingerling potatoes and the creme brulee! The rotating special was amazing and so creative.
We showed up on time and were told that we needed to wait for one more 6 o'clock reservation. We were not seated until after 6:30 for our 6:15 reservation. We were only told the specials after we asked. Our steaks were both under seasoned an undercooked. The server seemed preoccupied so we could not get an additional cocktail while waiting for our meals. We are frequent customers of Buffalo Block, the meal was subpar on our last visit and this visit the whole experience was awful. As residents of Billing they just lost a customer.
This is the place in Billings if you want a fantastic dining experience. We are lucky to have The Buffalo Block in Billings.
