Swung by Second Home after trying one of the hot spring options nearby. The tomato soup was the highlight and our group appreciated the vegetarian options available. With that said, service was slower than we'd hope to see and our group found the dishes pretty average overall.

It is a small place. Family owned. There was a buffet with instant mashed potatoes and gravy both were overcooked. The fried chicken was overdone and dry. The ham was thick cut but also dry. Thewaitress was a young girl who was maybe 12 did a great job and had a great smile. She made sure we had everything we needed. The cook was sitting at the counter watching TV.

Fries were cooked in old oil. Server dumped shrimp linguine juice all over me trying to serve plate to person beside me, server didn't even apologize. Served rotten milk to my mother for her coffee. Atmosphere is very cramped, servers are dirty touching there nose and hair then carrying plates of food to customers. Manager sat on his phone watching videos for everyone to hear offering no help.

Been coming to this place for years. It is always an annual visit, most often in the summer (though, on occasion, the winter). It is usually myself, my long-time high school buddy and/or a group of friends from all over the place. Heck, this place has seen girlfriends, wives . . . and now ex-versions of the same!!!

I am a simple fellow. I always order the same thing: a side salad (or the salad bar, which they brought back) and the On-Top-Of-Old-Smokey Burger. Sometimes I get a beer. Sometimes our group adds an app or two. Never complained. Never had a bad meal. Service has ranged from fabulous to ā€˜unique’. Sometimes we are the only guests in the place. Other times, there are a few locals. No odd stares. It goes well.

But . . . I think that ā€œFor Saleā€ sign is hanging like an albatross around this place’s neck. I always worried it would close one day. And I think it might, based on our last visit. The salad bar was a mess, whereas the previous two years it was amazing. The two staff members—one the cook, the other the waiter/busboy—sat around like the arrival of guests was an issue for them (initially we were the only ones in the place). There were flies everywhere. The service was haltingly serviceable. This was the first time it felt like we were intruding, as if these gentlemen were sorta’ put upon to wait on us, take our orders, and serve us our food. It was odd, in an odd place, that we have always looked forward to visiting (because we don’t mind odd, and Hot Springs is odd, in a good way).

Thing is, the food tasted like it always had tasted. The fries were fine. The burger was great. I opted for the side salad and it was a bit of a step down from previous visits (basically, just bagged salad fixings without much in the way of additions . . . which used to be the main draw with fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, and carrots). Getting condiments took forever, because the waiter would simply disappear and then avoid coming to our table (the only table in the place with customers). The cook? He was too busy watching the TV in the main dining room to bother with helping this guy either. And that is another thing that had changed this year. The bar (left side, facing the business) was now _just_ the bar, where it had been the place we had been used to eating in for the last decade. We now had to eat in the dining room (right side, facing the business), a place we hadn’t stepped foot in for years.

My friend and I left full! But we also left kinda’ sad. I am not sure it will be open next year. And, if it is, we might skip it and head to a place in town.

Again, this is a tough spot to run a business. And we support(ed) Second Home for years. But this last visit made us feel like ā€œfor saleā€ meant ā€œalready sold.ā€ Too bad. But thanks for many awesome memories. We appreciated what you offered over the years.

So, I stopped in on our way home from Kalispell. We had never been there before. Headed over to check out the salad bar, which was much to be desired. As I was looking about, a baby mouse fell into the beets in the salad bar. I brought the whole container up to the bar area as the little guy swam for his life. Little to say, the restraunt cleared out. Never again.

Dogs allowed outside = +! Chicken strips were edible. Fries were not. Welcome was friendly so we didn't complain as we were just passing through but on the way back we will stop somewhere else.
