A fantastic lunch experience at St. James Gate in Moncton!
We enjoyed a relaxing meal on the spacious and comfortable patio—perfect for a sunny afternoon.
To start, we shared a half-dozen fresh oysters, which set the tone for a delicious meal. I went with the Bison Burger paired with a crisp Caesar salad, and my husband had the Gate Burger with fries—both bursting with flavour and cooked to perfection.
Our server was an absolute delight—friendly, attentive, and full of personality, which made our lunch even more enjoyable.
Highly recommend for anyone looking for great food and a great vibe in downtown Moncton!
We had a gift certificate for that restaurant given to us. We specifically went there for that reason. After the meal, we were advised that sorry, our computer system doesn't take certificates. We had to pay the whole bill. Two things ; one give notice or a discount because it wasn't working and second, it's our money they are withholding. We are from Fredericton and made the trip in large part because of the gift certificate. I think it is disrespectful.
This place was the highlight of my trip to Moncton. Wife and I went 5 times in a week. Food was amazing, service was stellar not a single complaint.
I cannot say enough good things about St James’ Gate on Church Street in Moncton. After being left in the out in the rain (pretty much literally) by another restaurant in town where our reservation made in February and was cancelled by them without notice… St. James’ Gate took in our party of 19 with only a few hours' notice. The staff was amazing and I want to give a special shout out to our server Oliva and the manager on duty on the evening of May 7th (I am sorry I did not get your name but shout out to you too… you know who you are!) The staff went ABOVE AND BEYOND to accommodate my parents (surprise) 50th wedding anniversary dinner celebration. From coming outside into the rain to help assist my 94-year-old grandmother into the restaurant with my aunt to our waitress taking a look at a photo of our parents so as not to accidently give us away if they came early (which they did and she sat them on the opposite side of the restaurant at a table and played along until everyone arrived!)
The restaurant itself was beautiful with exposed brick and great atmosphere. There was live music that we could hear in the background when we were in private room that was great!
Food was excellent and well-priced. There was a lot of variety in everyones order- I think only 2 people got the same thing and everyone said their meal was delicious. Thank you to everyone who had a hand in making our celebration a success. From servers, managers, chefs and everyone in between. You made our evening fantastic- just as our parents deserved.
We went there to celebrate my partner's birthday and the food and service were amazing! The waitress had such nice energy. We had also brought a cake and they stored it in the fridge while we ate, and when they brought out they sang happy birthday! We will be back!
The morning of our parents 50th wedding anniversary party we unexpectedly found ourselves looking for a new venue with a private room. The service was beyond exceptional! From our server Olivia, who went above and beyond to make our evening fantastic, to the gentleman who assisted with our grandmother in her 90s to get into the restaurant, to the delicious food, to a great atmosphere, to accommodating our group the day of the event. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough and am so extremely grateful and thankful for everything they did!
Ate lunch in the pub so can't speak to the rooms. Love the in house shrub as a n/a option - so refreshing and tasty, and a nice match to a heavier meal. Good food, comfy seats, good service.
Can't speak for the rooms, but the bar and restaurant are fantastic. Food is very good, beer selection is very good, staff is excellent. Bartenders are excellent as well. Right in the downtown area, walk to everything. Great spot and I will definitely be back when in the area again.
If I could rate this zero, I would. My husband had to be hospitalized after eating at SJG, which until recently, was my favourite place to eat a casual meal. I phoned and left a message at the restaurant twice, but after two days, I have not received a response. I don't know anything about who is looking after the kitchen there, but I can say that on a previous occasion, we had to listen to (overheard) the bartender complaining about another staff member. I took friends to this restaurant previously. We will never go back.
Had an amazing time at St James Gate in Moncton, NB. As a lonely visitor on work related travel I was welcomed like a family member by barman Derek and local legend Charlie. Strongly recommend the chowder, they did not skimp on the seafood, plentiful scallops, haddock, etc…
I rarely share a review but this place is worth it. I liked it so much I came back again and ate the same thing!!

It's nice place, very tasty food and great service!
Went to the restaurant on Feb 28 2025. Restaurant has a neat boutique style decor. My colleague ordered the pork tenderloin and potatoes and I ordered the Gate Burger. Both were served surprisingly quickly and this had zero effect on the quality. The pork tenderloin was cooked to the perfect temperature and so was the burger. The butger having the bacon jam made an absolutely amazing flavour profile. Add some sweet to the saltiness of the burger and Boursin cheese making an amazing flavour.
Had dinner there Feb 11/25. Food was not very good. Salmon was very dry, veggies were from yesterday. Chicken appetizer had soo much spice it was terrible let alone hardly any chicken in it.
ordered two SJG special coffee - they salted the rims - OMG
Never ever again. I find it hard to understand
My husband and I have been coming to the Gate since it opened over twenty years ago for its great old world but cozy atmosphere. They have a great menu that offers a stellar variety of options and we have never had anything less than an excellent meal. The staff are professional, friendly and accommodating. The entertainment is great and Derek, hands down, is the best bar tender in town. It remains and will always be our go-to for a late afternoon or night time outing.
came for buck a shuck, unfortunately it is now 2 dollars per oyster during happy hour. Still quality Oysters. Their seafood chowder is great. Good atmosphere . What I appreciate the most is that the music isn't loud.
Great spot for professionals or date night.
Olivia was a great server ! She searched high and low for a container for my Chowder .
Cheers
