Hidden gem off the beating path in conover. Good food fresh from the farm. Bar, great service. Good selection of food from main dishes to sandwiches.

Brunch
July 13 at Fresh Chef in Newton, NC
This is a restaurant that we frequent for dinner and we learned they has started serving brunch, we wanted to try it.
We expected the same quality experience that we normally have with dinner. That’s not what happened.

We ordered a Virgin Bloody Mary and it was served with no garnish. We were told it’s because there was no alcohol. (Strange!) Waitress was very helpful. Easy fix. No problem.
Order #1: California Omelet. Eggs had a funny texture and omelet was barely warm. Bacon in such long strips that you couldn’t cut it. Opened the omelet to deal with the bacon, and discovered that the eggs were so overcooked they were brown and crispy. Pretty gross. The potatoes obviously came from a bag and were also overcooked. Too dry to eat. The cheddar biscuit was ok, not great. it had been over-baked but not to the point of being dry. Texture was similar to a Bisquick biscuit. Overall, an epic fail. Returned the meal mostly untouched.
Order #2: Traditional breakfast. Ordered 3 egg whites but was served 2 eggs over easy. Again the waitress was on it and quickly brought the egg whites. The egg whites were fried rather than scrambled (never had to specify scramble before but ok, let’s try something new.) About 5 minutes later they brought us another order of egg whites, those were not as good. Cooked in too much butter but edible. Potatoes on both orders were the same- too dry to eat. Cheddar biscuit on this order was very over-baked. It was so dark that it was just shy of turning black.

The waitress Elaine was very apologetic but there was really nothing she could do. The food was just bad. She comped the us the meal and beverage- which we appreciated. But we won’t be going back for brunch.

We were pleasantly surprised upon entering for our first visit. We were greeted by a lovely Hostess who seated us at a comfortable booth. Very tidy, well kept dining room, although , the light hanging over the table was a little too bright and shining in my eyes. We were ecstatic that breakfast was still being served after noon, so we both had breakfast. We both ordered biscuits and gravy I ordered a side of crispy bacon with mine. My husband also ordered an omlet. When the food arrived the gravy was cold. We asked for it to be heated, but they brought back hot, fresh, which was appreciated. We were disappointed that the biscuits weren't soft fluffy biscuits, they were like a drop biscuit with a crunchy outside and they had cheese inside. Not what we were expecting. The gravy tasted good, but didn't enjoy the biscuits with it. I had to ask 3 times for my bacon, and finally asked a different waitress to bring it. It was not crispy at all like I ordered it. We may return for lunch at another time to give it a second chance.

We happened upon fresh chef and decided to stop and try it. The service was amazing, atmosphere is great, food was AMAZING we had gumbo and shrimp with grits which is something that’s usually hit or miss most places, but they nailed it and we will definitely be back. Shout out to Elaine who was so friendly!!!!

We have been here a few times, it is near our home and we enjoy the atmosphere, BUT.. each time we go there, our meal is interrupted by a different wait person several times asking if everything was ok even though we just told them it was fine 2 minutes ago. This last trip, we had 3 different people come to our table to ask what we wanted to drink and to take our order. It was clear that no one knew where they were supposed to be. Time to order and the waitress did not know how smoked salmon was prepared asking my husband how did he want it cooked. (smoked salmon is cold out of the fridge and placed on toast) I was sorely disappointed when my toasted club sandwich came out on a cold non toasted bread. Who doesn't know how to make a club sandwich?! Also, we had to ask for a lunch menu since they gave us a breakfast menu and it never came. My husband had to go behind the counter and get it himself. We will go back and try again. Sheesh.

Managers should know how how to delegate there business. If you have 4 cooks all of them should not be focused on your tables. When you also have mobile orders waiting and no one assigned to worked on them. Very unorganized.
