Great spot for soup and sandwiches. We enjoyed it so much we came back the next day for more. I highly recommend their soup; we loved the crab and potato soups! Fan favorite sandwich is the goat cheese grilled cheese; add bacon for some crisp and or tomato for extra flavor. Order at the counter, or call ahead to order, take a seat and food will arrive after a while. It takes time at lunch for food to get to the table so be sure you have ample time. No special drink options; they’re all pretty basic. We grabbed an orange aid at the pharmacy on the block which was outstanding. The restaurant is clean and simple inside. Recommend the food!

Walked in to the place full of smoke that gave me watery eyes and a cough. Took my food to go and wasn’t impressed with the Cuban sandwich. It was smothered in mayonnaise.

We stopped by for lunch while visiting for the holidays and were blown away! The tomato soup special with grilled cheese was easily the best I’ve ever had. We also tried the sweet potato and sausage soup—it was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend!

The food was so fresh and delicious. The staff moved about like it was a choreographed dance, with little interaction. Just doing their jobs while providing a wonderful experience! Loved it all!

Pricey but delicious salad! Would’ve been even better if they added dried cranberries.

Ate there while visiting my cousin. Had the Mediterranean salad special and WOW what a bounty of fresh field greens, hummus, feta, tomato, olives, onions and chicken with homemade Greek dressing and fresh grilled bread. It was beautiful, plentiful and delicious. There was a happy energy in the room from the staff who prepared it to the owner who stopped at our table to say hi. Will definitely be back.

Update 09-23

I said I'd be back in less than a week later here I am! The broccoli and cheddar soup is absolutely phenomenal so is the chicken corn chowder! It pairs beautifully with the Chowan club!!

I’m in town staying at the Inner Banks Bed and Breakfast, and they recommended Downtown Roots while I waited for my room to be ready. I’m so glad they did!

The food is absolutely delicious, and the hospitality is amazing. I never felt rushed, and the cashier was super sweet, answering all of my questions. The sandwich had so much meat, and the potato soup quickly became my favorite—I’ll probably grab something to take back with me for the trip home!

If you happen to be in Edenton, North Carolina, definitely make Downtown Roots a pit stop. It’s a wonderful experience all around and truly delicious!

Quite possibly the best sandwich that I have ever eaten. It was called the Broad Street Bully.
