They remodeled and simplified the menu. When they simplified, many of the things that make a small town restaurant great were lost. For example, the pancakes were bisquick or something similar (just add water), the eggs are powdered eggs, the coffee wasn't quite diner coffee and all of their condiments are prepackaged. Some people like this but to me, it feels like the same kind of breakfast that would be complimentary to a hotel.
There are some things that you can get away with having prepackaged or premade like toast or biscuits or gravy. I dont think eggs should be one of these thing especially when you have a farmers' stand a block away from the building.
Staff was amazing and the diner was incredibly well lit and clean.
While the service was excellent and the atmosphere quite good, the food was middling. My pancakes were good, as was the bacon, but the eggs were not. They were overcooked on a mn tv
Lovely gem in the country! Wonderful catfish sandwich, done to perfection. Fried green tomatoes with a homemade dipping sauce. Found The Whistle Stop diner by accident on the way to SC. We came back the same way and stopped again for lunch.
Food was great service was great and waitress was friendly.
Was passing through on my way home from Virginia. I had not stopped there in over 15 years. Decided to stop and order take-out. The food was ready in a timely manner. The food tasted pretty good and the staff were friendly. I would go again!
They have the best desserts ever, especially the blondie!! I loved having a restaurant right around the corner, it was great for date nights! I hope they can reopen. I’m craving their desserts!
We have enjoyed D&R for years. The last few months they have stepped it up a notch or two. Some changes in the building which are much better. Their Friday sea food is a big hit. Don’t think you’ll match it this side of OBX. Their Texas toast burger is awesome. Generally my wife doesn’t order fried chicken in a restaurant. (She is number one at frying chicken) but she enjoyed their fried chicken.
Amazing little place. They were short on some side dishes but that didn't bother me with the shortage going on. She was able to offer me something else and the food came out quick and was so good. Most of all the waitress was just the sweetest and kept checking on us. Would definitely go back :)
Food was delicious as always.
I have passed by this fine place a few times and today I decided to stop in. Got the bean soup. OUTSTANDING and the best BLT I've ever had. Very friendly staff (don't remember their names. I'd like to give them a shout out) and very nice atmosphere. I hope to get there for breakfast one morning when passing through. Y'all have a great day and thank you for the great meal.

The food is good. Staff is very nice. The place has a nice feeling of comfort. A good place to go and eat and enjoy yourself
My wife loves this spot! We have driven all the way from Rocky Mount NC three times (85 miles) to enjoy the food and greet the wonderful staff.
The food was good, we had lunch cut off time for breakfast was 11am. I know staff right now is hard but I do feel the staff could be a little more friendly. There was no smiles at all or them even remotely happy. And the reason I gave them 4 star is the menu prices, they have this Friday special seafood. Where you can do an pick 2 or pick 3. The pick 3 deal is a good price but the pick 2 I eneded paying more when I could've separate it and got more. Example rounding up they had crab cakes for $11 and catfish for $12. The pick 2 is $24 so I paid a doller more. My spouse got a cat fish $12 and oyster (I believe it was called) $8 and he paid $4 over and unpaid 1 over when I could separate it paid less and it said on the menu all seafood items guaranteed fries and coleslaw so if paying separate I would've got 4 side items instead of 2. I did ask about portation and it was the same as a single and platter. So again they need to work on the deal pricing cause i ended up paying more and being my first time there it's hard to say if I'll be back. I can tell its definitely a neighborhood restaurant where everyone knows each other and have there regulars.
