I hate to post this because the tavern is small . . . But my husband and I had a truly fantastic meal there. The best we had in the area. Focacia, out of this world. Grilled salmon on salad, outstanding. Tenderloin on wedge salad, delicious. We arrived right before they opened. Good thing. They filled up immediately.

The best Focaccia, the miso butter and olive tapenade make it a must have. Great food quality and service. Our favorite place to eat in highlands.

Great gastro pub with fantastic ambience. The tuna tartare is spot on if your into local beers this is the place. It stays busy so get there early.

Stopped in for supper, had a short wait, and we were seated at the end of the bar. We were quickly greeted and settled in. Then things got bizarre. The guy who came and stood next to us was refused service. Then it seemed our order got lost, or dropped in the kitchen. After waiting a bit longer it arrived and was tasty. We ordered the main course, it arrived, and was a hot mess. So its a place to go to start out, socialize, and enjoy the crowd. Many of the entrees seemed to be bizarre creations.

Must be great as was packed at 5 o’clock on a Monday. Will never know due to wait list train wreck. Was promised a call when table was ready, two hours later…nothing. Happened to catch the guy outside on the way back to the car only to learn we had been crossed off the list. Claimed he called, if I am being charitable maybe he wrote my phone number down wrong, in any event, no call. Don’t leave to walk town if they put you on a wait list, stay there and give him the ojo…

We learned about Highlands Tavern while researching different places to eat to accommodate my food allergies. We were in Highlands leading into the July 4th holiday. We ate here twice, and it was very good each time. The menu has a good variety of options, and the team will do their best to accommodate requests. We had great service and wonderful conversations with the team and chef. There is no fluff and puff about the place. It's local owned and operated by a seasoned team and feels like our local watering hole back home. We sat at the bar both times and could not have been more pleased with our meals. The first visit was the Sunday night before July 4th, and we went late evening. That Sunday, we learned on our second visit, was the best day for the restaurant since the start of the year. It resulted in several items on the menu running out. While some patrons were irritated, we did not mind a bit. We had a great meal, and the chef did her level best, and succeeded I might add, to accommodate my food allergies with a limited menu. When we returned on July 1st, we went a bit earlier and knew with it being midweek, there may not be as many folks. Again, had a short wait for the bar - no biggy for us as we prefer sitting at the bar in a small place. This time we were able to get the tuna tartare (YUM) and saw the focaccia special which looked wonderful but HUGE. Again, the chef created a dish specific to my food allergies and OMG it was freaking amazing. I could not finish it all and had it for dinner the next day once we returned home. Still as good as the night before. Ryan (owner), Tim and Michael (barkeeps) Kenny (skinny guy running around), Vicki (kitchen) and the AMAZING Chef Kimmie are such a fantastic team. Not sure when we'll get back over to Highlands but when we do, we hope to these folks are still there serving up great food, great conversations, and great atmosphere. THANK YOU!!

Absolutely loved this gem of a Tavern in Highlands, NC. Kenny was our server and was most appreciated for his recommendations and insights into how best to decide on the menu.
Had the jalapeño burger and a steak burger. Even took some Crème brûlée cheesecake home.
It is worth a visit and highly recommended. Be prepared to spend a few $$$.

Don't understand the well-above-average ratings. Food's taste/quality was mediocre. Portions were very small! (ENTREE salad with grilled chicken maybe encompassed a cup of greens (at most), 3 morsels of cheese and a couple nuts. Dinners were served on paper plates. Atmosphere was a little above average for a pub, but nothing memorable. The service, on the other hand, was friendly and attentive.
Unfortunately, the dinner at the Highlands Tavern was our least impressive meal during our 3 day stay in this charming town--especially for the prices charged for such little quantities of food on paper plates.
