âââââ Disappointed, But Hopefully Just Bad Timing
My wife and I were visiting the Outer Banks and were on the hunt for some amazing seafood. After doing some searching, we came across Kill Devil Grill, and we were genuinely excited. The online reviews, photos of the food, and the overall atmosphere looked exactly like what we were hoping for during our trip.
Unfortunately, when we arrived, the parking lot was completely empty, all the lights were off, and there was a sign posted stating âLast Day: Dec 20.â This was confusing because online listings indicated the restaurant was still open. We werenât sure if December 20 was the last day for the season, the year, or if the closure was indefiniteâbut either way, it was a big letdown.
We also werenât the only ones caught off guard. While we sat in the parking lot looking for another option, at least 20â30 other vehicles pulled in. Several people got out to check the doors, all with the same confused and disappointed reaction. Clearly, many visitors were relying on the same online information we were.
After a quick search, we found Barefoot Bernieâs Tropical Grill & Bar, which showed as open onlineâand thankfully, it actually was. They ended up delivering exactly what we were looking for and saved our seafood craving that day.
That said, we truly wish Kill Devil Grill had been open. Based on everything we saw online, it looks like a fantastic place and possibly even better than the alternatives we found. Hopefully this was just a timing or seasonal issue. If itâs open on a future visit, weâd absolutely give it another shot and provide a proper food-and-service review.
For now, due to inaccurate availability information and the closure, this visit earns one starânot for the quality of the restaurant itself, but simply because inaccurate information of it being open and that we never got the chance to experience it.
Hopefully next time.

I don't understand all the reviews on this restaurant. We just drove there and it was closed and it looked like it had been closed for a while. The address was 2008 and the pic matched the building. Weird. All i can say is don't go there.
Very welcoming atmosphere, Health inspection score of 100%. Sword fish was excellent, highly recommended this restaurant.

Classic diner car with beach vibe. Friendly staff, Friendly locals. Shrimp were lightly breaded with house made remoulade sauce. Local draft beer on tap is fresh. Homemade dessert. Don't skip this one.

Part one of Brett Babick and Jenn Crossman made planning my wedding hell.
Iâve waited over a year to write this review to allow the emotions to cool down. During the summer of â24, I was planning my wedding. I was living in OBX at the time, my mother in law was a regular at this restaurant and built a rapport and a relationship with Jenn Crossman, a bartender, and Brett, Babick the owner of the restaurant. Jenn and my MIL were talking about the upcoming wedding and she disclosed she did wedding planning. We met up with Jenn and decided to move forward with her as our wedding planner.
We went in to the grill for dinner and drinks one day where we chatted with Jenn and discussed needing a caterer, Brett came up and said âwe would LOVE to cater your weddingâ we got very excited since we loved the restaurant. Brett and the cooks coordinated a food tasting with a totally custom menu for no charge. While there, Brett tells us, âWe are not in the business of making money off of weddings, we are going to charge the cost of food and service and nothing else.â Remember this.
I want to take a minute to thank the staff and kitchen for facilitating that and doing so much work for that tasting day. I appreciate that more than you know and apologize that you have to deal with this man every day.
We received the invoice around 8/21 for our 9/9 wedding and it was $4,025 (before tip) to feed 30 people. Including a $700 fee for on-site service, which we never asked for and specifically asked if we can pick up and do the service ourselves. That was not an option for them. Thatâs is $134.16 per person. Our menu consisted of basic foods, wings, fried pickles, salad, pigs in a blankets, etc. (we had a casual backyard wedding) My dad began discussion with Brett to come to an agreement on cost. I found out from Jenn on 8/29, 10 days before my wedding, that Brett pulled out. He ghosted my dad after telling him âitâs not worth it if we donât make at least $3,500â so much for not being in it for the money. (I believe that is the amount he said but the communication was kept between him and my father to reduce stress for me right before my wedding)
I understand that money is a necessary part of business but $134.16 per person is ridiculous and price gouging. He got the amount of people wrong, we had to correct him on that multiple times. He refused to provide us with a cost breakdown, how much each item costs. That is standard practice for invoices.
I get that the wedding industry is messy and is determined to over charge you for everything. But donât OFFER to cater my wedding, tell me youâre not going to over charge, and then over charge and ghost me a week before my wedding. The greed the reeks from kdg is disgusting.
For the complete lack of respect, integrity, humility, empathy, understanding, professionalism, and overall humanity, my family and I no longer support KDG or South of Kill Devil Grill and Brett Babick.

The pasta was delectable. The blend of the sauces truly blew me away. The succulent ribs really take the cake though. Incredibly tender and flavorful. Eating here felt like a warm hug on a winter day.
