No mermaids, put in a kayak at the Jordan Dam spill way, do it quick before the park rangers catch you. Then paddle down river. Plenty of Crappie, cat fish and blue gill. When you are done have a buddy meet you at boat ramp on 42.
Attention! The directions Dan Chegash gave are entirely false - they bring you further south to look up river at the southern tip of McKay Island, NOT the beginning of the Cape Fear River. It's clearly visible in satellite view. Again, do not follow his directions..
With that being said, this was VERY difficult to access here this labor day weekend, the mosquitoes were relentless! The gravel road ends at a gate which I quickly cycled right through with little trouble. After that it got pretty thick closer to the point and I had to walk through many thorny bushes before making it to "Mermaid Point" itself. It was only so clear to view the water, and you couldn't get a panoramic with each of the Haw and Deep rivers meeting, plus again the bugs! Is it worth it? Ehh probably not, but at least I got the pics and the site is off my list to see.
First two pics are looking south at the Cape Fear, the third is the Deep, the final is the Haw. Visit at your own risk!
A place of such geographic significance should have never fallen into private ownership. Very unfortunate. Should be a park. Lovely country for sure, but you can’t get anywhere close to the place without trespassing, and even then you’re walking through dense wood and undergrowth, ticks and snakes and such lying in wait.
This is on private property, and the owners and neighbors REALLY don't want anyone to trespass.
On private property. Once you get to the water the land is not cleared so there is not a good view. Possibly better across the river.
Don't use these directions. Will not take you to the river but a private home and property. Also, if anyone has better directions please share.
Rating for directions, not the site. Google Maps took me down Lower River Rd and along a powerline on Cape Fear Lane, which led to a driveway to a house across the river from Mermaid Point. Looks like the wrong route.
Good place for flat heads
Must be reached from north of the point. Go down a long gravel road, come to a gate with no trespassing signs. Go about 300yds through a trail, brush and some mud untill you reach the point. The trail is navigable in April but probably bug invested in summer. It was incredible to see the birth of the Cape Fear River. It's a nice bike ride through the country side.
Use a deep diving jig with rooster tail for mermaids in late spring....ncsu engineering 95
It was so beautiful?
We came in today with alllllll of our boys! Excellent drink prices!!
Food was ok. Service was really slow. What we thought would be a quick lunch took almost 2 hours. Would not have minded but was in a bit of a hurry to get back on the road. Had a long trip ahead of us.
Got there for a burger and beer on Sunday, August 18. Service was slow due to: 1) the hired help returning to college at Campbell and 2) a new chef with a new menu. Expect a New Orleans Cajun spin to the dishes. This was one of the best motzerrla popper appetizers my wife and I ever had. Just make sure to eat the cherry tomatoes with the poppers, not separately. Great views of the Cape Fear River. Not perfect, but we will be back.
Food was good and atmosphere is really nice. Service was friendly but a little slow. In all fairness, we were a large group and ordered individually off the menu, rather than buffet style. Menu apparently had changed in past couple of weeks, too.
