What a gem! We ran across the Tin Trout as we were meandering around the area and had no idea what to expect but knew that if the parking lot was full it had to be good. You're greeted by a cute entrance and a friendly hostess. We had to wait a couple of minutes but no big deal. Our server was super friendly and the service was great. I love a place that has a good daily specials board. Everything sounded delicious and as good as the chicken and waffles sounded I had to try the trout, after all, it's what is special about the area. They bring a complimentary serving of pickled cucumbers packed with flavor. I knew this was a good indication that the rest of the meal would be tasty. We started with a cup of corn chowder served piping hot, which was a blessing on this cold day, with a huge handful of saltine crackers. The chowder was delicious and very creamy, with potatoes and some veggies added to the mix. It was almost like the inside of a chicken pot pie without the chicken. Following the chowder was their smoked trout pasta carbonara which was out of this world and rich in flavor. Always check for thier specials on the board and make sure that they are open for the season before you head over. You wont be dissapointed.

Me and my friend visited this restaurant for dinner today after visiting the Linville falls area today and we were amazingly impressed by the staff and food we got. The hostess was so sweet coming into and leaving the restaurant. They truly made us feel like we were at home and like family even though it was our first time visiting. Our waitress was phenomenal. She was warm, kind, and personable. She personally thanked us for choosing their restaurant over others in the area, and by how great the food was we were very glad to. We started out with the peel and eat shrimp and poutine. Both of which were greatly portioned and delicious. My friend got the grilled trout with potato cakes and collard greens which he claimed were all amazing. I don’t even like fish and the trout was delicious and the potato cakes were amazing. I got the Tin Trout burger with homemade chips and my burger was delicious and fresh and my chips were better than any restaurant I’ve had, all of them were crispy and fried to perfection no soft ends or anything. Then thanks to our waitresses recommendations for dessert we got the Gooey butter cake with ice cream and the Lemon berry mascarpone which were both delicious and amazing. I usually can never finish all my food at a restaurant much less as much food as we ordered, but with the quality of food we had I couldn’t let one bite go to waste, or in a Togo box. I visited the restroom while there which was incredibly clean, smelled great, and pretty posh to say the least. I wish we would’ve taken pictures but our phones were low and tummy’s couldn’t wait. We are from over 3 hours away near Chapel Hill, and we will be making the drive back up there soon just for the food. Thank you all. Highly recommended.

Service was AWESOME and the food was the best! I had fried catfish with red eye gravy. My hubby had blackened salmon with a relish. We both had mixed veggies and green beans with bacon. By far the best green beans I had in a very long time! We started off the meal with fried Brussels sprouts that melted in your mouth! The food was so tasty we had to try dessert. That was off the chart great. We both decided we would be back again! Good band for your buck and very tasty!!! Go to The Tin Trout and find out for yourself!!!

Truly, a not so hidden gem! Food was so good I literally teared up at one point. The locals are so lucky to live close by to this restaurant.Everything we ordered was magnificently prepared. We were only disappointed that we couldn't order more items. So we are coming back to try some of the things that we missed the first time through. Our server Joe led us through some of his favorite menu items to help us with our decisions. We started with the fried oysters, which were as good as any we have ever had, including New Orleans and including fine dining restaurants. The seafood chowder was also very well done. For entrees, we had the grilled trout and the chicken and waffles. Trout was prepared perfectly it was moist and excellently seasoned and came with the best potato cakes I have ever had, light and fluffy and filled with cheese and bacon. The fried chicken and waffles were the best we have ever had in any restaurant anywhere and were even better than the ones I prepare at home. Dessert was also as excellent as every other part of our meal. The entire staff was so friendly and accommodating. They made us feel like family.I could not recommend this restaurant any higher. It is a must stop and a must return! Thank you for taking such good care of us.

From the moment you enter this restaurant the staff makes you feel like you are an old friend. Joe was our server and everything he suggested was 5 star. I trust Joe with my life now. ? We are restaurant owners, we asked to meet the owner to thank them. They happily obliged. Kirsten was just as welcoming as her staff. While devouring our current meal we planned our next visit to this restaurant. This place is a Gem!!! Will become regulars every trip we make to NC.

I've just had another wonderful lunch at the Tin Trout. The fried oysters and fried green tomatoes were outstanding. The oysters were luscious and fresh and the fried green tomatoes were drizzled with hot honey that was delicious. I've also had the poutine and it was exceptional. The shrimp and grits are a wonderful treat and I'm really impressed with the quality of the food. When I first sat down, a customer at another table came over and said you have to start with the desserts. He was part of a table of six and said the desserts were sooooo good. The wait staff made the lunch a very pleasant experience. I would certainly recommend this restaurant to everyone.

It's impossible to understand how a restaurant doesn't know when to change their fry oil that's rancid. It ruins what would have been a good dinner but the after taste of oil that's broken down being used too long leaves an oil slick in your mouth. You buy your desserts, which have artificial whipped "topping" on them. 1st you're eating an industrial piece of dessert, then you don't have the $3.37? to buy a pint of cream, whip it & add some sugar? The green beans really throw everyone off, because people expect southern green beans or gourmet Al dente green beans but the menu doesn't say, extra spicy green beans. The wait staff doesn't mention. The 2? little blackboards you carry around as menus, the oddest idea ever, gives 0 description of anything. We have so few places to choose from & Morels was so nice, you'd think their daughter would know oil only has a few goes before it needs REPLACING, Google it. It's OFTEN when 1/2 your menu is fried food. You'd think having come from a French food background of her parents she'd know what whipping or heavy cream is & how to stabilize it so it doesn't "fall". Any experienced "cook" or "chef" does. The inconsistency of the quality of the food is the #1 thing that will kill a business. The hours & days are impossible to keep up with. Spending a lot on dinner & eating rancid oil ruined the meal for 3 people that had food cooked in it. Yet you dare say anything & the owner is defensive & unaware something is truly wrong. I hope the quality can improve & they can afford real cream vs the cheap taste of artificial on desserts she says she doesn't have time to make in house. The parking lot is empty when most restaurants employee parking lots are full prepping for meals. Often even at 4 no employees are there. Maybe you could make your own desserts like other restaurants if someone came in in the morning to make them. And another employee could be on fryer cleaning & oil refreshing duty. It isn't rocket science even for a home cook. A waste of $ for our dinner & dessert. You're only open dinner & don't offer decaf coffee? Again, not rocket science or difficult or hard to comprehend people at night May want decaf. Maybe some changes will come about.

Just go, trust me it’s well worth it. A good variety of dishes with specials that will have you going back again. The flavors are spot on 5 star quality. Unpretentious atmosphere keeps it all comfortable. Wrap it all up with a wide desert selection of more outstanding flavors. Our favorite restaurant. Well worth the drive, take my word for it. ?
