I am visiting from NY, decided to try some Mexican food. Hacienda El Rey has great food, service and ambiance. Very clean. The food is very authentic, unlike many other places that serve “Tex Mex food” Nellie (owner) and Evelyn treated us like family. I highly recommend this restaurant. It is a diamond in the rough.

I've discovered my new favorite place. I almost hate to report on this as it will only bring more people to see if I'm telling the truth. Excellent food, courteous, fast and friendly staff, clean and kept that way dining area. This food is a party for your mouth!!

Honestly, best Mexican food in Waxhaw, but it seems like they know it too well. When dining in, the food and service are great! But beware ordering for takeout. Every single time that I've gotten togo food from this location, it takes upwards of 20 to 30 minutes after your expected time to be ready.
Now, I completely understand that restaurants get busy! A bit of an extra wait is not an issue at all! But to be consistently that long is frustrating. The reasoning that they want your food (especially tacos) to be fresh is admirable, but they don't start cooking them till you arrive, even if you call in the order, so it takes twice as long to get food. This becomes compounded during busy times, so it's a slew of frustrated people waiting on their togo food crowding the door or standing right outside.
I truly believe that this is a fantastic restaurant, and have given them so many chances, but unless this issue is fixed, if I'm not dining in I'll just have to get togo food elsewhere.

The food was wonderful and paired with a 6pm evening 🌆 was a perfect date. Drinks are awesome and the service is friendly and welcoming. Definitely will be coming back and telling friends.

Hacienda El Rey’s is a pretty authentic place to enjoy tacos. The chicken had the flavor of a village in Oaxaca, MX where I lived. Our server was really good; even complimented my Spanish tho I only used a small phrase. I recommend this place if you are looking for an authentic Mexican restaurant in Waxhaw.

The staff are SO NICE. I placed an online order for pickup and someone called shortly after to confirm some of the order details. They also upgraded us to the view cheesy birria tacos when I had placed an order for just the regular birria tacos and OH MY GOODNESS, they are to die for! Everything was delicious, so fresh, love their guac and pico but the cheesy birria tacos were really the start. We’ll be back this week just for several orders of those.
Really great atmosphere though. My pickup order was at 8:30 when they close at 9. It was a weeknight, they only had 1 table seated when I walked in. I really try not to be that person ordering to go within the hour of closing but everyone was so friendly, they really made me feel welcome and not an imposition with the late timing at all. This place is a must!
This was our first time dining here, and I was thoroughly impressed. The restaurant has a warm, inviting atmosphere that immediately sets the tone for a great experience.
The food exceeded expectations. Every dish was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. The birria tacos were perfectly seasoned, the fajitas were hearty and delicious, and the guacamole was easily among the best I’ve ever had.
Service was excellent as well. Yasica was welcoming, attentive, and very helpful in guiding us through the menu as a first-time guests.
Portions were generous, prices were very reasonable, and the overall quality was outstanding. I’m already looking forward to coming back and trying more of the menu. A fantastic first visit, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for authentic cuisine.
