We didn't like our aged steak, however, the cheaper steak tasted better. The dessert menu is amazing, but didn't try.

We wanted a nice, intimate dinner at one of Bismarck's finer restaurants. Rather disappointed, to say the least. 1. Our server was either really inept or it was his first night alone w/out someone being there to help/train him. He was a nice young man, but not yet ready to serve at what many call a "higher class" restaurant in Bismarck area. 2. After our main course was eaten, the bread plate and bread board and the main course dishes were left on the table. This became quite an issue for him (and us!) when he arrived with the dessert we ordered! There was no place on the table for him to place the dessert! He stood there, handed us our spoons and had a rather bewildered look on his face wondering what was he to do now, that there was no place to put dessert! (Additionally, he'd given us the check before even asking if we wanted dessert!) 3. He went past our table numerous times, never removing unneeded plates or the little pile of 'garbage' that accumulated from the tea bag packages, straws, etc. 4. Now for the food----Having had the Chicken Oscar there before and also at other restaurants, it was a dish we were eagerly awaiting. But it was nothing at all to write home about unless one wanted to have a plethora of complaints! There was little to no flavor, the crabmeat had a decidedly "odd" flavor about it, the asparagus was tiny and tough. Mashed potatoes looked as if they were merely slopped onto the plate. Mind you, there was a minimal effort on presentation but it wasn't enough to hide the overall lack of good work on the part of the kitchen staff. 5. We both worked at 40 way back when it was called East 40. Times have certainly changed there....and not for the better! An $80 tab for two was, in our opinion, not worth it. I know, in today's economy that doesn't sound too pricey....but still...... 6. To be fair, it was a Friday night, they were busy, but most of these complaints could have been alleviated by better wait staff training and definitely more attention to the kitchen staff's efforts. 7. Will be go there again? Maybe...but for about half the price a couple nights later, we went to a franchise restaurant in Bismarck and had an excellent server and the food was much more flavorful. Sorry 40 Steak & Seafood....But it's time to up your game. You have a very unique place there with a wonderful atmosphere--something many of us desire for an intimate evening out. So hopefully with more attention to better serving your clients, you can really be proud of the place again.

We went with a group of 8 on a Saturday evening. We arrived at 6:00 for our reservation. We did not get our entrees until 8:40. It was so painfully long, no idea if they forgot about us? Our waitress was very nice, it must’ve been issues in the kitchen. And when the food finally arrived, my husband’s burger was extremely pink, fell apart from being undercooked and tasted terrible. The toppings they gave for the burger were laughable, it was an inch long piece of lettuce. Normally we would’ve sent it back but we wanted to just eat and finally get out of there. The hangar steak was good, but way overpriced and extremely small. We have been here a handful of times over the years to give it a chance, and every time is just not good. Won’t be coming back.

Whenever we go back to the basics at 40 Steak & Seafood we are never disappointed. The filet with the Oscar topping and the Chicken Oscar are two of our favorites and we were not disappointed. The sauces were drizzled perfectly with just the right amount and the Decoy merlot was a great choice.

Weve always had great food here but this visit we paid 75 for a ribeye and it was so tough, very disappointed.

I was highly disenchanted with the fact that entrees come with zero sides. You literally pay anywhere from $30-99 for a steak and have to purchase sides à la cart. Name any other restaurant that is structured this way? The food was just okay. The steak at Long Horn or Texas Roadhouse are equally as good- or better for a much more affordable cost and INCLUDE two sides. The service was mediocre with very long waits for simple requests (it was a Monday- the restaurant barely had any diners). We will not be back.

The steak was tough. The potatoes were good. For the flavor of the food, the prices are too high.

We’ve ate here a few times, fairly good value and tasty food, we’ve tried a few different steaks and sides from here and you can’t really go wrong with any of them. I was disappointed when after going a couple times I saw on their website they have a porterhouse steak special on Wednesdays, so we planned our next date night there on a Wednesday but they said they don’t do that special anymore. Furthermore that was months ago and they still advertise that special on their website.

Our experience was decent, the service was great and the selection on the menu for food and drinks was good.

Food was disappointing. For a starter we had the seafood dip, which was served with store bought mini breads (I swear it is those Stonehearth mini naans). The dip was good but not amazing. Our entree was the $99 (at time of writing) dry aged cowboy ribeye cooked rare and we had asparagus, mushrooms and mashed potatoes as a side. Here there was a mistake, we ordered the mushrooms as a side but the restaurant also offers the mushrooms as a topping to the steak and that was what the gave us instead, a minor error but a bit annoying. The sides were all bland, with no sauces and light seasonings, which was disappointing. However, the most disappointing part of the meal was the flagship ribeye I mentioned before. It was just fine, not good and not great. For half the price you could get a better ribeye from any chain steakhouse. The dry age didn’t impart enough flavor to make up for the light seasoning in the cooking and the house butter we got with it brought the whole thing up to an okay experience. There was also an acrid, bitter flavor on the edges of the steak, not sure if that was from how they did the sear or the dry age, but it detracted from the already mediocre dish.

Drinks and wine selection were fine for the type of restaurant.

Finally, the bathroom was a disaster. My wife told me the stall locks were hanging on by a thread, the toilet rocked like a rodeo, the sink water pressure was sad and she was grateful she wasn’t in a wheelchair as the stalls were not accessible.

Excellent service and food was delicious! We ate in the bar as the host told us the rest of the available seatings were pretty loud.

Had the cowboy ribeye. It was tough and had no flavor. Worst steak I ever ate. The bake potato and glazed carrots were very good.

The inside makes the place look bigger than the outside does. This is an “Old School” supper club!!! Highly recommend this place and will be back again!!!
