The Loaf and Ladle was originally a restaurant in Exeter that I frequented for many years; but, after the restaurant space there flooded out several times, the owner closed it. He moved the business to the mill building at One Washington Center in Dover a few years ago. Then, he moved it to its present Main Street location, altered the name, and concentrated on baking the wonderful breads the restaurant was noted for. It’s been somewhat of a secret that The Loaf and Ladle is in Dover because it’s located inside Smiley’s Discount Beverage in the former fast food and pizza-making space. You kind of have to know that The Loaf and Ladle is there, so it’s a hidden gem. I recently visited the business to get a loaf of bread. There were many choices that included Herb Parmesan, Oatmeal, Jalapeno Cheddar, Sourdough, Anadama, and more. After some deliberation, I chose a loaf of Herb Parmesan to have something different from common breads. During my visit, Aidan, the owner, waited on me. I got to ask some questions. For now, bread is the only offering. Soups may be offered in the future. Aidan also said that the hours may change; however, when he and his staff aren’t there, bread can be paid for at the Smiley’s checkout. So, the breads are available potentially seven days a week unless they sell out. Near the end of my visit, an employee brought out a big tray of freshly-baked bread. I watched him loosen the loaves from the sides of the pans meticulously with big dough-cutter. At home, I had a slice of the bread with butter. It had a nice even texture with no air holes or bubbles. And, that solid quality gave the bread some weight - just like other premium breads. I was eating something substantial. It had the all-natural quality, as no preservatives or additives were used. The bread had a very fresh, wholesome taste, especially since it didn’t have a lot of salt in it, either. It was delicious. I’ll be going back for more. I rate The Loaf and Ladle Pantry at 5.0 and highly recommend a visit for some special bread. If you found this review helpful, please click THANK below.

Great artisan bread at a great price. I enjoy every loaf. The owner is wonderful, too!

Stopped by LLP @ Smiley's and scored 4 loafs of Anadama, Herb Parmesan, and Sourdough. They are soooo yummy. Anadama makes the best french toast.

The anadama is just as a I remember from when I was kid visiting Harlow's bakery and the Loaf & Ladle in Exeter. The cinnamon swirl melts in your mouth as a delicious breakfast toast treat. Service was friendly, prompt and welcoming. Can't wait to see what they have for food items soon! Truly the best homemade bread around!

No longer at 1 Washington St, but I'm happy to say that they are relocating, only one star because Google required a star, I've never tried their wares! I remember Exeter fondly...

so good! The Cuban pork soup is super tasty and the really know how to build a sandwich. I ordered carrots in mine and was ready for a pile of shreds that fall out, but no! They slice them thin so they lay flat. If you're looking for a good, wholesome, tasty lunch at a fair price, check out the load and ladle in Dover, NH. Thanks for the awesome lunch.

Truthfully I was going to keep this place a secret since I found it quite by accident and was feeling selfish but then i started feeling guilty! For those of you with a discerning palate or more importantly those of you who just love great bread - you have to check out this local bread company. It is a local company, with local employees and local ingredients that has a wide range of great breads. It is always fresh, wholesome and great, especially with a slab of Kerrygold Irish butter.

Had only 2 soups opening day. Taste meh.. I thought the chilli had great reviews. Spices they used I didn't like, maybe personal preference. But for a soup and bread place only 2 soups? Better hope you like the one of the two. Not worth returning sadly.

This is the best bread ever! Boom! I have had it since i was a boy and now it still tastes as good as ever. It's real bread, with great care taken to make and you can tell. Simple ingredients and amazing outcome! Your mom should be proud that the Loaf and Ladle name lives on through such a great product. Highly recommended!

Great place for casual soup, salad or sandwich. Tasty and fun...take your relatives when they visit! Service was adequate, value is average.

YUMMY soups and breads daily. In warm weather enjoy lunch on the porch by the river's edge.
