Ambrose delivers an exceptional culinary experience every single time. Tonight marked our third visit in the last two months and the evening was once again a delight. It is always an honor to have the chef interact with guests and Chef Stanley does so with such passion and enthusiasm for the menu, one can’t help but be captivated. The meals are never rushed, the cocktails are top notch and the menu an amazing selection of thoughtful, complex and absolutely delicious tapas style dishes. What’s more, service included the owner and inn keeper Jaime, who is also engaging and so very pleasant. For anyone who likes to experience food, appreciates the preparation and presentation, and wants to savor each moment, Ambrose can’t be beat.

A delightful surprise, first class food menu, I recommend to follow cheff’s recommendations and share different plates.

Outstanding service and decoration

Did not stay at the Inn this time, it will be a must next time.

Highly recommend it

Some of the most beautifully designed and delicious food I’ve had in a long long time. Pure care goes into every plate that landed on my table.

Love the small dishes to share, especially because it leaves room for dessert. It was great.

The dining experience is always top notch at Ambrose. We enjoyed a relaxing meal in their backyard oasis on a beautiful summer night. Jaime, Stanley, and new server Jack were all so personable and accommodating. The food is absolutely amazing, always! They are small plates meant to be shared. We put in our whole order at the beginning, the plates were spaced out nicely, and I never felt rushed. It's always such a relaxing experience there. We had a 7pm reservation, and we were closing the place down a bit after 9pm on a Wednesday. We never felt like we were being rushed out. Jack brought us over a complementary 10 year old port after we finished our dessert. It's the little touches that make all the difference! Maybe it's a good thing we don't live closer, because we'd be there all the time!

Ambrose never disappoints! Dinner last night on their gorgeous outdoor patio was perfect! Our gracious and engaging host Jaime was so welcoming and helpful throughout our entire “unrushed” evening - as usual! Chef Stanley also provided his usual friendly service along with his outstanding, delicious food offerings. And let’s not forget Jack! Yes he’s new but this young gentleman worked tirelessly all evening (a “Jack of all trades” you might say - pun intended!) and was equally polite and helpful.
You simply MUST try Ambrose! The ambiance, the food and especially the wonderful people there are second to none!
Thank you Jaime and Stanley (and Jack) for another amazing evening!

June 2024:
Ambrose has a tapas menu. The dishes are creative and flavorful. Typically four to six dishes for two would make a nice dinner. Fois gras, prosciutto, Mexican duck bao, shrimp cheese gnocchi, sea scallops, pollo en chicha. Meyer lemon and guava dessert. The chef is from Ecuador and uses the spices he grew up with, which gives an interesting twist to familiar flavors.
We eat in the six table dining room, but they also have a lovely outdoor area which is used when it does not rain.
Accessibility notes: front entrance has steps. The bathroom has one step up.

Exeter has become a destination town for great restaurants. Ambrose is in the same inn as Otis which is another superb restaurant.
Ambrose is tapas style. We had six dishes which was a little much, we both thought that five would have been enough. Of the six I enjoyed the shrimp the most.

Wheelchair accessibility: The entrance to the Inn is not wheelchair accessible from the main entrance and the bathrooms have a step in front of them.

Hidden in plain sight, this little gem sits inside (and outside) an old historic building doubling as a hotel right on the gazebo square in Exeter. Inside is very "antiquey," almost formal, but out back behind a tall fence seculding you from downtown, is a pretty little garden where most of the tables are. We had not trouble getting a reservation and, it turns out, all reservations that night were slated to be out back in the garden. That was fine as they had heaters but rain was forecast. Anyhow, we were greeted immediately and seated near a flower bed and an outdoor fireplace (working but not on at the time) and a propane heater. The menu is all small plates with what appears to be a Latin American theme. Everything looked great. We ordered two from the left column (more appetizer-like items) and two from the right (more main course-like). It was sufficient but not a great deal of food. Cocktails were good but their drink menu is nothing special and they didn't have much of a variety of liquors. Still, the service was attentive and the food came promptly and well timed. Everything tasted excellent. Like any small plate restaurant, the bill added up fast and we spend much more on less food than we would have elsewhere. But the garden was a gorgeous setting and with the municipal parking lot right there it was a breeze to come and go. We'd go back

Food is love and we felt that at Ambrose. We made a restaurant reservation months in advance at another local chef owned restaurant only to find out it was not in the books and no space was available for my daughter's college graduation dinner. It was recommended that we try Ambrose next door, as an alternative. You can imagine I was a hot mess mama as I walked up the stairs almost in tears scrambling to find a solution to the failed dinner plan. At Ambrose they bent over backwards to make us feel comfortable and welcome and quickly worked to make room for us. The experience was absolutely delightful. Expensive and not what I had budgeted for this dinner, but truly wonderful and exactly what we had hoped for in our dining experience. I would spend these dollars again anytime because the experience was so special. So perhaps, this was a happy accident. Food is love and we felt that at Ambrose. Thank you for all you did for our family to make the evening so special. I look forward to sharing such a special experience with others.

We were just in the area for a night and they snuck us in last minute. We are so glad we got the opportunity to eat here. We ended up having 6 dishes and dinner split between two. It was all very delicious. The service was excellent and they were all very nice. The food does come out "as it comes" but is by design so you and yours can sample everything you can off of the menu. My wife said this was one of her favorite meals she's ever had! If we ever end up back in Exeter, we have a pact we will book a meal again here no questions askedHighly recommend the Duck Bao and the Gnocci!

Really special place. Food is eclectic, beautifully prepared and tasty. Tapas-style is a lot of fun for a couple or small group. Drinks were creative and delicious. And the cozy, quiet ambiance might be the best part. It feels like a special event in someone's home. The service is also enthusiastic, informative and very upbeat. One thing I would rate 'only' a 4 was dessert. It was good and creative but taste-wise not quite equal to the wonderful food that preceded it.I'm sure it's not easy to get a table but keep calling, it's worth the effort.

We visited Ambrose in Exeter recently and had an amazing experience. The owners, Jamie and Stanley, stood out and made it a wonderful night for us. From the music to the atmosphere, everything was perfect. We especially love the unique home style of the restaurant itself. It was comfortable and charming. My husband and I ordered five tapas, and each one was more delicious than the next. They were thoughtful and creative dishes, clearly prepared by a talented chef. The olive plate was exceptional, as were all of the other dishes we shared. Our drinks were served perfectly as well. This is easily one of our favorite restaurants in Exeter and I have no doubt we will back very soon.
