Honestly, I thought long about writing this review and it pains me to bring attention to the negative experience I had at an ice cream shop, of all places.
I travel for ice cream and it is quite often, even out of season to many places on the east coast and beyond.
It’s shameful that I had such a bad first visit here at Sundae Best in Avalon on the boardwalk. This was mainly due to the service I received at the window. Young girls tend to have a difficult time managing their attitudes with peers around a relaxed setting and this was no exception. It was evident there was flexibility in their given responsibilities. Maybe they forgot they were working on such a light traffic day.
I was waiting for my SIL and kiddos when I stopped at the shop, I found a table around the corner from the window and rested after a long beach day. I let the girls working know that I planned to order when my family arrived back from the playground, that I wasn’t loitering. I saw there weren’t many food options besides maybe a hot dog and I wasn’t interested as a snack.
While waiting, I was eager to try some new ice cream flavors, I was denied (which is acceptable policies to have). I do believe there is a friendly way to present that. However, when I continued to ask a few questions about the flavors to narrow my choices, I think of the slim 6 flavors to choose from at this location, I was met with disgust for my interest in knowing more about the unique ice creams (some being signature flavors). I typically order a cup of ice cream for immediate consumption and a pint or so to take home. This was important to me for making a decision on what I was going to take home. This trip I only chose to have one small portion.
I may have also asked about dyes or added color in the ice flavors for sake of the kiddos allergies and went back to sit at the table while I continued to wait. While sitting by the open door at the back of the scoop shop (where you pick up ice cream after ordering around front), the girls could be heard very clearly complaining and mocking the questions/interactions we had prior. No judgement, what you do behind CLOSED doors is your business, but it can haunt you when you make poor decisions in the wrong setting(s).
The lack of pleasant interactions during any of the above and hearing the immature, non-professional staff, added to the “exceptional customer service” listed on the website, I felt this was a fair way to express concerns.
For those interested, Avalon Mud is I believe a vanilla based ice cream with caramel of some kind.
I did enjoy the ice cream flavor (vanilla peanut butter?) that I purchased but it was nothing special compared to many local available shops nearby. I wish them success if they’ve found better service and will consider giving a second chance.

We are extremely disappointed with Sundaes Best. Refusing to scoop from a new tub of vanilla and saying they no longer are concerned with people’s allergies is not a good look. This used to be our favorite place. Guess things have changed.

Ice cream was good but place was very crowded!! The size of the ice cream (1 scoop) was huge. Way too much especially for kids. We ended up throwing some away!!

Sundae Best is a family-owned business that resets the paradigm for experiencing homemade ice cream and water ice at the shore. First and foremost, they treat every single customer as if they were family – with the upmost respect, compassion, and kindness. They are extremely friendly, welcoming and always mindful – they even take the time to get to know their customers on a personal level, first name basis, and often remember their previous orders -- like who does that in this day age! It’s so beautiful to see a business go above and beyond the expectation of your normal service industry simply because they really care about making you happy and want nothing less than for you to have the most enjoyable of experiences while vacationing and relaxing at the shore. When you shop here, because of how welcoming and open they are, and the culture they have created, you and your families experience of tasting their incredible products is that much better. Now, on to the ice cream and water ice. Every single flavor/option is magically delicious, and you can’t help but want to eventually try everything they offer. It’s always made fresh, with love, and great attention to detail -- and they use the very best of ingredients. There is no better way to enjoy the shore than to make a stop here (or in my case, many stops!), see your family laugh and smile and their bellies full. I give Sundae Best my highest commendation because they really are the Best in the game – no question about it! If I could give no stars I would. I've never been to an ice cream shop where after spending $20 on tiny cups of water ice then being told no to a sample. Even though it was extremely obvious they prefer catering to their own. Minorities beware there are other ice cream shops in Avalon.

My mother and I visited Avalon NJ gor a couple of days and had a wonderful time. We had so much to eat for lunch and went out for delicious ice cream for dinner

I love Sundae Best! Their small cones are still two scoops and you can get two different flavors. Love the Mexican Chocolate and the Pistachio.

We love Sundae Best but sadly they are closed for the 2021 season. They indicate reopening in spring 2022…and the other location in Avalon is only open on Saturdays for orders placed ahead of time.

We came here one night instead of Springers- this was delicious ice cream and my Mom wanted frozen yogurt- it was also delicious. Line moves quickly. Very organized and friendly staff and owners. Will definitely come back- we bought several pints to take back to our beach house. Black raspberry was my favorite.
