If you want an authentic NJ Italian spot that never fails to deliver you're looking for Belmont Tavern. Cash-only and rough around the edges but you really can't go wrong on their menu. The only suggestion is to go with a big group and get there before they open to secure your spot. We went with a group of 8 which is about the max they can do and we got to try and share things family style. Chicken Savoy, Murphy Chicken, cavatelli and pot cheese are some of the highlights. You definitely have to try at least one of these dishes. Put it on your list now!

Step into the Belmont Tavern in Belleville, NJ, and you are immediately transported to a bygone era of old-school charm and nostalgia. This iconic establishment, a beloved staple of the local dining scene, effortlessly blends history with outstanding culinary excellence.
On my recent visit, I had the pleasure of indulging in their legendary Stretch's Chicken Savoy—an absolute masterpiece. The chicken, perfectly seasoned and tender, was bursting with flavor, a testament to the time-honored recipe that has kept patrons returning for decades. Paired with the shrimp, which was equally exquisite, I found myself savoring every bite. Both dishes were generously portioned, ensuring that you leave satisfied and longing for more.
Though the dining area is cozy, its intimate atmosphere only adds to the charm. The popularity of Belmont Tavern is undeniable, and the space fills up quickly with eager diners, so be prepared for a lively, bustling experience. However, this vibrant energy is all part of the allure, making each visit feel like a celebration of good food and good company.
For those who appreciate a full bar, Belmont Tavern has you covered, offering a wide selection of drinks to complement your meal. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a longtime fan, the Belmont Tavern remains a quintessential dining destination, where tradition and flavor come together in perfect harmony.
Five stars, without a doubt. A visit here is not just a meal—it's an experience steeped in history and flavor. Highly recommended!

It was our first time there. No reservations taken, first come first served. Bar opens at 4 food at 5. I suggest hitting the bar before hand to get a jump on a table. Took us about 45 minutes. Seating is limited and they only serve from 5 to 8 but it was well worth the wait. Chicken savoy was outstanding but I think the real star was the long hot ravioli. Then pork franchise, yes pork!. I'll be back for sure
Parking: Free street parking, not many spots nearby

Came for the first time and expected a busy place. Had a good time, good food and drinks, but some short, chubby drunk guy that is losing his hair kept claiming he was a celebrity and wouldn't shut up about it. He was with a group of guys that he kept telling them how important he was. I heard he worked with Jay Leno and Howard Stern, but he wouldn't shut up about it. Over and over and over. The funniest thing is he told his party that it was all on him and yet, he took money from others for tip (i guess).

Smh, when will people learn to read? We live in the neighborhood and I’ve been coming here for years. Belmont Tavern menu is their menu. That’s their story and they’re sticking to it! And it’s their formula for success. A big part of the charm is that it’s small, local, and not fussy. Like the owners said, you want peace and quiet? Go somewhere with peace and quiet. you’re here for the excellent Italian food and local flavor. Belmont Tavern don’t ever change!❤️☀️❣️PS- “SJ” is an Ahole who doesn’t know what he’s talking about

It was fine, except Stuttering John from Howard Stern was there bothering everyone telling us that he was famous, and how you didn't wanna cross the owners, because they were mobbed up.
1. Don't go if Stuttering John is holding court.
2. I guess don't make the owners mad or they might kill you. According to John.

I went here with my family the other day and some short guy was yelling about how he's famous and pointing at his picture on the wall to everyone around him. He was sitting next to me so I asked him to keep it down and he whispered "This place is mobbed up" like it's some sort of threat.

Was very excited to eat at this place. Brought my whole family. Chicken savoy was fabulous. As we were paying our check, Howard stern whack packer stuttering John walked in. He was very intoxicated and was with an escort. He’s about 5 foot 3 in real life and very out of shape. He kept asking everyone if they wanted a pic. Most didn’t know who he was so it was awkward. As we were leaving, he made his way to our table, he shook my
Hand, and then whispered in my 9 year old daughter’s ear that “this place is run by the mafia”… like a typical 9 year old, my daughter answered loudly with “what’s the mafia”? You can hear a pin drop after that. This put a damper on an otherwise pleasant evening.
