If you want an authentic NJ Italian spot that never fails to deliver you're looking for Belmont Tavern. Cash-only and rough around the edges but you really can't go wrong on their menu. The only suggestion is to go with a big group and get there before they open to secure your spot. We went with a group of 8 which is about the max they can do and we got to try and share things family style. Chicken Savoy, Murphy Chicken, cavatelli and pot cheese are some of the highlights. You definitely have to try at least one of these dishes. Put it on your list now!

You can travel the world...I do...and find fancier dining with little effort. But few restaurants anywhere can match the mouth watering food and old school atmosphere of the Belmont Tavern. Both the Chicken Savoy and Chicken Murphy...make sure to ask for both Hot and Sweet with potatoes and peppers...are beyond delicious (and simply can't be duplicated). You will dream about them for weeks! The Pasta (go for the Penne which is lighter than the Cavatelli) in the red sauce with pot cheese, the simple salad, the Hot Peppers and on and on and on are the legendary and not like anything else available at other dining spots. This is the real deal. Just go (and go early as the lines are long, they do not take reservations and they ONLY take cash)!!! Worth every minute of any wait!

It was our first time there. No reservations taken, first come first served. Bar opens at 4 food at 5. I suggest hitting the bar before hand to get a jump on a table. Took us about 45 minutes. Seating is limited and they only serve from 5 to 8 but it was well worth the wait. Chicken savoy was outstanding but I think the real star was the long hot ravioli. Then pork franchise, yes pork!. I'll be back for sure

Finally made it to the Belmont Tavern, and glad we did. First note, parking is very tough, we parked 3 blocks away on a side street. Np reservations and no credit cards, cash only. Come early or you will have a very tough time to get a table, I'm guessing less than 15. When you enter very dark until your eyes adjust.Is it worth it, Yes definitely! We arrived at 5 pm when they opened , the small bar was already full plus 5 others were already waiting, so they must open the doors earlier. Waitresses was very nice, we only waited 5 minutes to be seated. We opted not to have any liquor a little to far from home, but most customers were. We ordered their famous dishes, the Stretch Chicken Savoy and the Shrimp Breps. When they arrived, nothing special with the presentation but once we started eating it turned into a Wowoment! The Chicken was one of the best things I have ever eaten, an incredible taste the shrimp was also very good but more if an appetizer than an entree. Chicken was so good we ordered a second plate, but we couldn't finish it. Please understand this place is very inexpensive, the bill with everything's was in the fifties plus tip. The ambience is that of a turn of the century bar, very small and tight. Check my photos, but the food is well worth it. At times a celebrity hangout, so much so while we were there I shook the hand of a former N.J. Governor. Make the trip at lease once!

Had a good time, good food and drinks, but some short, chubby drunk guy that is losing his hair kept claiming he was a celebrity and wouldn't shut up about it. He was with a group of guys that he kept telling them how important he was. I heard he worked with Jay Leno and Howard Stern, but he wouldn't shut up about it. Over and over and over. The funniest thing is he told his party that it was all on him and yet, he took money from others for tip (i guess).

Smh, when will people learn to read? We live in the neighborhood and I’ve been coming here for years. Belmont Tavern menu is their menu. That’s their story and they’re sticking to it! And it’s their formula for success. A big part of the charm is that it’s small, local, and not fussy. Like the owners said, you want peace and quiet?
