Charkoal Portuguese Grill is conveniently located at the Berkley Heights train station. This first visit for takeout proved to be really good experience. I ordered the Garlic Shrimp, which came with Rice & French Fries. The rice tasted freshly made and was plentiful; the Garlic Shrimp was well seasoned and the aroma alone made me eager to taste. Once I got home with my order I couldn't wait to dive in. The food was still hot and ready for me to devour. I enjoyed the meal immensely, but could have done without the fries because as always, when fries are covered in an aluminum pan, they lose their crispness; other than that, everything was great; I will most definitely go back & try other menu items.

We found charkoal Portuguese and had their food last nite. Small gem in Berkley heights. We ordered the kale soup, fish soup, grilled steak, fried fish sandwich and cod special. The portions were v generous and the food was delicious. Have plenty of LO's for today. And oh the bread was real fresh Portuguese rolls which was sooo good. We topped it off w flan n tiramisu. Oh my they were so good. Thank you Andre for a delicious dinner. We will be back again to try other items on ur the menu.

It used to be good place to go but not anymore. The service is really suck. I ordered by the phone and went there to pick up. There is someone before me, look like they has no clue what they are doing. The chef tried to figure out where is his order. Another guy was on the phone, doesnt care nothing. A woman walked in cleared the mess and gave the guy his order. Then, she just left me waiting no greeting not even asked me what I ordered and continue walking in the kitchen start cooking and ignored me. I have to yell and tried to get someone attention, hello ??? I need to pick up my food. WTH The service is getting worse these days and not the place I would go back for BBQ anymore. The chicken were dried and ribs are also dried, small portion and not tasty anymore. What wrong is this place really? The woman who just walked in the door not even recognized Im there, let me standing and waiting WOW!!! This is how she treated customer! The chef looks at me and shake his head realized what a mess they are in the place!

I was hoping for authentic taste, but the food is quite bland. Even the aji amarillo sauce they sell on the side did not deliver the punch that it should. I had many dishes prepared by my Portuguese friend, and they were nothing short of amazing. If this restaurant is trying to adjust the taste to "American" palate - don't! It ruins the true flavor of Portuguese cooking.

Just have a great dinner, at home. I would have taken pictures, but the family got to the food first. We got a whole chicken, with rice and beans, and pork ribs with fries and vegetables.

I just ordered a combo chicken and ribs platter, calamari, and Diet Coke. My order took 1.5 hours although restaurant is 4 miles away, they gave me a regular coke instead, calamari was tiny and completely dry and cold. I ended up paying $55 for just standard chicken and ribs and extra rice and fires. Not pleased with this place!

Not only breaking the law, violating COVID protocol, but also gave us the wrong order.- customer came in without a mask, stood at counter for 10 minutes, was neither asked to put on a mask (there is a sign on the door re: "masks required"), nor to wait outside for her order- another patron opened the door to pick up an order, but upon seeing unmasked customer at counter, he left to walk around the building & come in the opposite entrance. Still no response from counter staff.- employee behind counter/in kitchen walking with mask hanging off face.Complaint made re: these events (plus incorrect order), restaurant response was untruth re: the incidents. Takes no responsibility - could have asked customer to wait outside & will bring her order. Claimed "can't control" if employee behind counter takes mask off from mouth & nose. Never addressed error in order. And then tried to blame Doordash.

@ CHARKOAL on Saturday, 8/1/2020: not only does the staff not inform customer re: requirement to wear a mask, but the cook isn’t wearing one either...note: hanging one below the chin is NOT the same as wearing a mask.

Excellent, authentic food and above-and-beyond customer service!! Our Grubhub delivery person forgot a bag of food, so a member of the Charkoal team came out to personally deliver it to us even after the restaurant had already closed. We will definitely be returning!!

Like most people I've been cooking a whole lot lately, but I wanted to give myself a break so I tried take out from here and I was very happily surprised. Ordered the full BBQ chicken with beans and mixed veggies, and they do not play games with the portion size, it was a full chicken with tons of veggies and a big serving of beans - it could easily feed a family of 4. Or one guy after a serious workout like myself, I crushed almost all of it but I still have a nice serving left over for lunch tomorrow. The bbq on the chicken was very flavorful, the skin was delicious, they chopped it up into nice portions. Will definitely order again in the future and try some other proteins next time. Obrigado!

Food was great and had a nice selection. Nice sized platters, had enough for lunch and then again for dinner! friendly staff! I got the chicken platter, my hubby got the pork short ribs. Both came with rice and fries. and then we got 2 empanadas, which were huge!
