If you’re coming here with Michelin-level expectations, this isn’t the place for you. What I truly value about this spot is its independence and originality.
It’s less about fine dining and more about the warmth of childhood memories—nostalgic decor, friendly faces, fair prices, and of course, a really great hot dog.
I’m not usually a fan of chili dishes, but you have to try their in-house chili paired with a ripper hot dog. It’s a magic combo. I generally eat healthy, but when I’m here, I let myself be a kid again—right down to the cold root beer.

Best hot dog in the country....and more
First and last. I had two dogs and onion rings. Onion rings burnt and bun was falling apart, chili was horrible. Did I order the wrong thing? I was so looking forward to a good hot dog.

This place has everything from good food, good atmosphere to plenty of parking. The hot dogs are amazing and the home made mustard and relish on them were a must. I never tried a “ripper” before but it was good, still had a nice snap. I was expecting it to be a lot crispier but it was still satisfying. I got three with toppings and it was pretty filling. I had to try the fries with gravy, also recommend. Everything came out hot and fresh. You can eat there or in your car, the inside is standing only.

This feels like an inside joke I am on the outside of. Are these positive reviews ironic?
I want to love it, I really do. The atmosphere is awesome and the staff is super friendly. But the dogs are not it :(

Finally made it to the rutt hutt which is considered one of the best hotdogs places in New Jersey and it's been around since 1928. I wasn't impressed to that level it's more like a dirty water dog from a hotdog vendor in Manhattan. But it was good but Nathans in Coney Island Brooklyn and boulevard drinks in Jersey City are still my favorite overall. The service is walk up and order and they are cash only which isn't a bad thing. Overall it's a great place and visit because it's been there so long and it's historic

Maybe I'm hot dog spoiled from growing up in Coney Island but I don't get what the draw is here. This a a local joint frequented by people who know what's served, and you figure that out quick when you don't see a menu (they do have them). Dogs (AKA Rippers) are salty, no seasoning, and then more salty saurkraut on a soggy bun. Fries were the frozen kind. I tried both sit down and counter service, and didn't care for either hot dog. I did like the cold beer in a frosted mug (even with the broken handle 🫤). I can't see myself going back, checked off the hot dog quest bucket list.

The hot dog was great but the bun was hard. Needs to be steamed. Otherwise delicious

Cool retro hotdog joint. Best food. I always get hot dog and onion rings but their traditional dish is the roasted duck!

Rutt's Hut has been around for 90 years and is a favorite visited after being gone for 30 + years and it's the same, same great food same look, the bathrooms and food service areas have been overhauled and modernized without changing the dining area, bar or front end. My Great Grand parents would stroll right in and find it a welcome familiar break from this crazy world we have created. If I went back and showed them the modern world. Visit here for great food, Great NJ service and a true throw back to Northern New Jersey and New York culinary history. But remember in the past the didnt use bank cards or credit cards at community eateries and checks weren't excepted either so Bring some cash and the do have an ATM on premises for you're convenience. So live a little more simply and eat more richly. Live life have fun and visit Rutts Hut. Don't forget to get a Draft Birch Beer for you and the Kiddos while visiting and enjoying your meal.

I can not for the life of me comprehend the hype behind this place. I’d heard about it online and decided to take an hour detour on my way home after an event to try it… what an absolute waste of time and money. We of course got the rippers, and they were disgusting. I would rather eat Sabrett dogs straight out of the fridge, no bun no condiments than this place. Maybe I should’ve gotten different toppings, maybe I should’ve ordered it more or less cooked, but I don’t think it’d have made much of a difference. If I can eat a boiled Nathan’s with a line of ketchup and mustard I should be able to eat “Americas #1 hotdog 6 years in a row” the same way and be happy instead of disgusted. If you are traveling to or from somewhere in the area and are very close by and really want to try this place, I guess go see for yourself how overrated and bad it is. If you’d have to go more than 5 minutes out of your way not worth it. Biting my nails and calluses off on the way home would’ve been a more appetizing meal.
