Great brisket sandwich, mysteriously terrible counter service. Guy took 10 minutes to come out from behind the curtain and help me, tho he knew I was there and the store was otherwise empty. I peeked back there and he was just sort of… doing other things. Then disappeared and took another 20 minutes to assemble a sandwich that had 2 things on it (meat, slaw). The sandwich tasted great (so, 4 stars because folks should know there’s good food here). Not sure if I’ll go back.
I have been hearing great things about Macona Bbq for awhile now and I am glad I finally tried them out. First off this isnt your typical traditional often delicious back yard bbq place. There is a fancy flair and flavoring to the rub here that I can't quite put my finger on but it is delicious whatever it is. I got a 2 meat platter which of course I chose ribs and brisket. The ribs are smoked exactly how I like them, NOT fall off the bone completely after one bite. The ribs had a little pull to them which is perfect. The smoke flavor is great and again, that rub, I could put it on any meat. The brisket was sliced thin and still had some flavorful fat on it. The fat adds flavor and I am glad they kept it on there. They give a mustard carolina type sauce and a bbq sauce if you choose to use them. I tasted them both and they are great but i am a purest so the sauces went into the fridge and I enjoyed the meats how they were. The sides are great too. I got a vinegar based slaw which i prefer over mayo bases. These guys dont know me but it's like they know me because they had sliced jalapenos in there which gave the slaw a nice spicy and tangy flavor profile. The beans aren't your average baked beans either. They'd e great with some rice or next to any meat! Last but not least, you can judge a bbq joint over corn bread. This corn bread was top notch! Dense, moist (yeah I said it), not crumbly, with bits of corn on the inside. Yeah this place gets a 5 out of 5 all day. Follow them on social media to see specials they have going on that you wont find at any bbq joint!
Catch these guys at a town fair, the local farmers market, or at their shop on Haddon Ave. and you'll get some of the most inventive and delicious BBQ in the area Philly included. Always curious for what will pop up next on their IG. A visit to Macona never disappoints.

So my Husband is a big fan of JL Jupiter so we drove down here from New York City. Not being biased my husband smokes his own meats, so we decided to try other smoke spots. So we saw JL Jupiter and said we had to go.Horrible and hostess yes she was sweet but had no knowledge of the food and extremely slow. To a point you heard her convo from the back.My husband ordered the brisket plater with mash and fries. The meat was missing the smoke aspect and over down he stated. Now I don’t eat meat so I was really excited to try to their seitan UMM Horrible with a capital H. Taste like it came straight from the frozen section including that sauce. I was eating general TSO instead is amazing f BBQ. The vinegar coleslaw NOPE.Feel bad for my husband back to NYC
Perhaps this was an off night. My wife and I arrived at 7:30 and they were out of chicken and ribs. I decided to get the last sausage they had because the pork was seasoned with curry (according to the menu ) and I was not in the mood for curried pork. My wife did get the pork and it turns out there wasn’t any curry flavor at all. The pork was tasty but dry. My sausage was not hot at all when it arrived and was very greasy. The Mayo cole slaw was average and the deviled egg was way too salty. You only get one deviled egg for $ 2.50. The “kale” looked like a pile of green mush and was inedible. I would have told one of the two gentlemen working about the kale but neither of them ever checked to see how our meal was even though we were the only people there. I had to remind the gentlemen that we ordered kale because it was never given to us with our order. Neither gentlemen apologized about forgetting the kale or for not being able to operate the POS system when we were trying to pay. The corn bread was great.
Ok. Let’s start by listing your real hours!! Closes at 5 on Sunday. Had people coming over for BBQ at 4:30. Well enough time to order. Called at 3:50 and they are closed. Great customer service!
Just tried for the first time, it was ok. The brisket was dry, the ribs were ok not great, the beans were nasty, cornbread was ok. Hopeing it would have been good since I wanted some good bbq, but just ok
Macona catered my daughters christening this summer it was fantastic I let them take control of what to do flavor wise so glad I did test decision ever.
The brisket didn't have much flavor and had a lot of fat on it. The cornbread overwhelmingly tasted like mac and cheese. I'm guessing it was baked in the same pan. The kale was flavorful but had more vinegar then I prefer. I liked the flavor of the deviled eggs but was thrown by the ginger taste. The mashed potatoes were pretty bland. Overall I was disappointed with my order.

A pleasant surprise. Very intimate. Nice portions. Excellent kale. Meat was moist and tender. But, the deviled egg (1) is a little expensive @ $2.50.
Food is decent when I can actually try it. Place is rarely open the hours it claims to be open and they hardly ever answer their phones. Special always sells out. Here's an idea - try making more. Owner seems too busy TRYING to be hip on social media than running a successful business. Stick to cooking.
I’m going to keep it as simple as I can. The food at Macona was delicious. The boyfriend and I were craving bbq. We have driven by numerous times and I suggested we check it out. Needless to say, we’ve should’ve come sooner. You won’t regret it.
Very good. Definitely recommend. They have a brisket cheesesteak that is to die for. They only have them a few times a year. And they are not cheap. $15 bucks. ?
I would punch a baby in the face for their burnt end brisket cheesesteak. Luckily, Marconi BBQ accepts cash. Absolutely amazing!
