Very fresh sushi. Been getting sushi here for the past 10 years and quality is consistent

NEW OWNERSHIP. The family that has owned Umeya for what seems like forever now has recently sold the restaurant. I am all for giving new places and people a fresh fair chance and did just that. Unfortunately, the new ownership has taken this once local gem in the opposite direction. Fish, like the tuna, is no longer that beautiful color accustomed to a high end sushi spot that takes pride in their fish. It is now that odd neon pink color that comes with poor freezing techniques on low quality tuna. To say I am disappointed is an understatement. I plan on revisiting Umeya later and seeing if things have improved. If it does get better I will update my review. Fingers crossed.

Friendly family business. They remember you if you're a regular. Their sashimi is amazing - incredibly fresh and silky like butter! Their sashimi / sushi combos are definitely good value for what you get!

Ordered take out during covid - the only option they offer. Phone calls can be made after 2:00p, but I couldn't get a hold of someone until closer to 2:30p. Even for take out, their sushi continues to be of epic quality, and small quantity. It's a quality over quantity type of place, and when it comes to sushi quality wins. Absolutely without a doubt, plan on getting the sushi omekase. The quality of the sushi is beyond anything that they will offer in their regular sushi and sashimi entrees, which admittedly I order with the omekase since the portions are small. For four and a half (child) ppl, I ordered: 3 sushi omekase 1 unaju (eel on rice) 1 sushi/sashimi combo 1 sashimi entree Nabeyaki udon - which only came with one fried shrimp and sadly they had already mixed the noodles in the broth so by the time I got home most of the broth was soaked in by the mushy noodles. Note -- let them know you absolutely want the noodles packed separately. We also received a bowl of rice, 6 miso soups, and 6 small salads, which was essential a handful of romaine lettuce. Their heavy use of styrofoam was disappointing, but otherwise a solid take out meal.

The food is good but the attitude of the owners and staff is terrible. It is very expensive and you would think that you might get a smile once in a while for those prices. And, they don't always wear masks. Won't be returning.

Sushi is fresh, sometimes they are as busy that wait times are a little high, and service slow, but consistent in terms of the quality of fish.

Been going here for years and always loved this place. Fresh sushi. A local favorite. Occasionally is closed on the most inconvenient times though. Will not stop me from continually going.

Freshest sushi around! If you live in the area... go and see for yourself. I have been going there for over 10 years, and never disappointed... Service is ok.. not great... but worth the sushi.. Miss the byob ! They now have a liquor license. Can add a lot to your bill if drinking.. Not a cheap dinner, but worth saving for.. Not fancy, not elegant, but dark and relaxing... Can be romantic, if you sit in the back.. but be prepared for very very slow poor service.

This will be the last time I am eating food from this place unfortunately. I have been coming here for years and the sushi was actually good enough to make me come back even after being talked to rudely and slowest service time after time. The waitresses are the owners kids and just about the rudest lazy people you have ever seen. I ordered just last week from here and got a salmon avocado roll wrapped in cucumber and today when I tried ordering they told me they don't make that. The women on the phone was very defensive rude and facetious. Do not waste your time coming here. Always rude people and unfortunately people don't change. Go try Hachi sushi in fort lee or Daruma in englewood. These people SUCK.

Good omekase sushi for the price. The staff is friendly and attentive. House hot sake is good. 5-stars

This is one of my most favorite sushi places. Service is excellent, the sushi fish is fresh, and they have freshly caught specials.

The service was really slow took 15 min to get our drinks. Some wrong pieces came out and even though our entire Bill was almost $400, they wouldn't take the wrong pieces off the tab. I've come here a lot and thought they could have at least thrown in a small appetizer or piece. I also came here on my birthday and my kids snuck off to ask the waitress to bring out the ice cream with a candle and to sing to me. The waitress laughed at them and just brought over the check. It's good, but I'm going to go somewhere where the service is better.

One of my favorite Japanese restaurants in the neighborhood. The food here is super fresh and deliciously prepared every time we go. Love the cozy atmosphere and will be going back again.

Fresh & authentic. An OG sushi gem in the heart of Bergen county. My family has been coming here for 10 years and it's the best sushi in the area. Always quality and we look forward to eating here each time. Highly recommend for those who appreciate a delicious sushi experience.

My long time friends from Japan are visiting the US and staying in Edgewater. I drove up from DC to with my son to spend some time with them. We wanted sushi but didn't want to go into the city. One of the employees Mitsuwa suggesed we go to Umeya. The reviews are clearly inconsistent on Yelp, but I believe that Umeya deserves a very high rating. Their food was excellent. I consider myself knowledgeable but my friends are even more so. The sushi ingredients and preparation were spot on. The Tempura was cooked perfectly and the Unagi was excellent (far superior to Unagiya in NYC). The decor took me back to feeling like I was in Japan. If there was one flaw, it was that they could have used another server. That being said, he did a very good job and spoke Japanese which, to me, makes a difference when at a Japanese restaurant.
