It's time to say goodbye. We enjoyed coming here for the chicken and rice but to many frustrating experiences led us to finally go elsewhere.
If they are busy and hand you your food, they won't check it, and twice food was missing from the order.
On another visit, we were told the order would be ready in 30 minutes; we arrived about 20 minutes later and still had to wait an additional 30 minutes because our food seemed to have been given away. No apologies from anyone.
Most recently, we were given beef short ribs instead of the whole chicken we ordered. My wife doesn’t eat beef, and I avoid the beef short ribs from there due to repeated bones in the meat.
On one occasion, I cracked a rear lower tooth eating the beef short ribs and had to see a dentist to have it filed down because it was scraping my tongue. I never raised the issue at the time because I thought it was my luck, but after experiencing bones in the meat about 2-3 times after that, I gave up and only ordered the chicken. I later mentioned concerns about bones in the beef shorts ribs to the staff and what appeared to be one of the main cooks, but it seemed brushed off and I was simply advised to order another steak style instead. That made me feel your just a number and not a customer.
The repeated frustration outweighs the convenience of being nearby, and we’ll be going elsewhere.

Not once not twice but three times I’ve been to this hole in the wall and I’ve been ignored. Service there absolutely atrocious. Workers INCLUDING THE OWNER only treat you like an actual customer only if you’re Hispanic. Only go for the mere convenience because the food is bland. Won’t recommend this place to anyone. Worst place to eat in Dunellen hands down. DONT SUPPORT THESE PEOPLE because THEY only care for PEOPLE that look like THEM!

I’ve now been here three times. My bf has been coming to Dunellen BBQ on and off for 10 yrs. This is a family run Portuguese/Spanish style BBQ restaurant. This place was hopping. The staff is very friendly and they all were working very hard to get everyone’s orders ready. The staff is very nice. I placed my order to go for (2) half orders of BBQ Chicken Combo. A 1/2 order comes with a half a chicken cut up into 4 pieces of bbq chicken, a choice of yellow rice, black or red beans, fries, or salad. They also serve several different types of homemade Empanadas, Yuca, and Fried Bananas. This is not a big place. There are a couple of tables and a few counter seats. I saw in their refrigerator they have ready to go desserts. I added 2 Flans to go with my order. When I got home I was really surprised. They didn’t skimp on our orders. They gave me 1/2 a chicken cut up into 4 nice pieces of chicken which was juicy with a side of hot sauce and a side of their bbq sauce. Both sauces were good. I also got an abundance of delicious yellow rice with some veggies in it. I chose black beans which came in a separate container. I enjoyed everything and so did my boyfriend. For dessert we each got a flan. I was truly surprised. My flan was super creamy, it had lots of caramel sauce on the bottom. The flan was so very good I couldn’t stop eating it. I highly recommend trying their dessert.They also sell Tres Leche Cake,Rice Pudding, Oreo Cake,Tiramisu, Cheese Cake, Carrot Cake, and Red Velvet Cake. Dunellen BBQ offers an extensive menu. They offer chicken, steak, and seafood along with kebabs and sandwiches. There is a free parking lot next door. It’s small bc they share it. There’s also some street parking. I would definitely recommend trying this place especially their BBQ Chicken Platter.
Should have learned our lesson and stopped trying this place. HORRIBLE service. 45 minutes turned into an hour and half for basic food that should take 20. Then they forget the $16 chicken fingers, my husband has to drive back, and they catch a major attitude. Insanely rude. Dozens of other options in a 5 mile radius serving the same food. DO NOT EAT HERE.

10/10 would recommend. Unlike some other BBQ Places, this one actually gives you more for your dollar. I ordered 3 beef short rib platters and they load it up so definitely worth it in my opinion. Definitely coming back cause I love the food and the people are soooo nice and helpful my first time there.
