My family and I had a great experience at this Mexican restaurant. I had the blackened chicken fajita and my mom and brother had pollo mexicano.. Definitely excellent dishes.

(Reposting due to censoring off of prior review, and nasty correspondence from owner attempting to intimidate us for writing about our true experiences) The food here is totally inconsistent, and can range from over-cooked and dried out as if made hours earlier, to way over-salted, to mouth-burning spicy even when you've told the person taking your order that you wanted the meal without jalapenos. But along with Don Jose's inconsistency is the downright nastiness, rudeness and condescending attitude of the owners/managers, who act as though they're doing you a favor by letting you buy your meals there! Don't bother explaining whether you or someone in your party has special dietary needs or allergies, because Don Jose's manager or other personnel will interrupt and insult you, tell you they don't want to hear it, and say they don't need customers telling them how to cook their food! If there are any problems with your order or the quality of what's served, such as a recent experience where almost all rice was given and hardly any beans in a dinner platter--after we explained that the person ordering the food couldn't have too much rice due to a diabetes problem--there won't be any apology or desire to make the situation right. After getting bad, inconsistent food on multiple occasions, and being talked down to with total hatred and disrespect that borders on racism by the ownership, we will never patronize Don Jose again. With the area's growing Mexican population and demand for quality Mexican cuisine, hopefully competitors will move in and provide a much more welcoming alternative where customers of all ethnicities are welcome.

Place clean, small and ambiance is decent. Food is good. However with a limited variety. Prices are high and portions are small. Tables are too close together making a private conversation difficult without having your neighbor listening. In addition, It would be nicer if it were not BOB.

I love Don Jose’s the food is amazing and the staff is so friendly! 10/10 recommend if you’re in the area. In fact, you should travel to East Hanover NJ just for this establishment!

I don't know if this place ever had a more authentic flavor, but at the moment it definitely lacks flavor.By far the worst chilaquiles I have ever been served.
I have gone here at least once a month for years - they're one of my favorites! My previous review is several years old and I just wanted to confirm that they are still consistently excellent!

Worst experience.. they substituted vegetarian for chicken and charged us $14 extra on lunch menu for 2 dishes.. Avoid this restaurant at all costs.. total ripoff for the quality of food which is very low; bland rice; over cooked vegetables and too cheesy enchiladas

Stopped in for a meal with coworkers. Service quick to set a table up and had us seated without waiting on more to arrive. Appetizers: Free chips and salsa to start. - jalapeno poppers were mostly cheese, needs more pepper. - loaded nachos, I could still see the chips, not so much loaded as had some toppings - queso fundado was excellent, get this, extra tortillas to share the cheese and sausage! Main: a steak fajita was ok, wish more veggies and steak dried out fast on the hot plate; a little fatter would've been better on the sizzling plate Desserts: flan was smokey, not smooth, the tres leches ok but I've had better at Whole Foods, and the churros with caramel and ice cream were a table favorite. I really enjoyed the fried ice cream! Overall good options, service. Some dishes better than others but enjoyable overall.
