If Gan Eden had a branch on Route 9, it would probably be called Hershy’s Bakery. You walk in and right away get hit with that warm, heimish smell of fresh challah and rugelach — mamash a nefesh-refresh. The showcases are loaded like a kiddush on Shabbos Mevorchim: babkes, cakes, cookies, doughnuts, every chashuve maaseh taig you can think of. You come in “just for a challah,” and somehow you’re walking out with three boxes and a danish already half eaten in the car. Don’t ask. The staff is super friendly, real heimishe chevra — patient with the indecisive types who stand there for ten minutes shtelling, “Nu, should I take the chocolate or cinnamon?” (Answer: both. Always both.) Their challos are fluffy, geshmak, and look beautiful on the Shabbos table, the kind you put in the middle and feel like a real baalabos. Prices are normal, portions are generous, and the simchas hachaim is included at no extra charge. For Shabbos, Yom Tov, or just a random Tuesday “I need something shtark with my coffee,” Hershy’s is the go-to. Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates a proper heimishe bakery with a leibidige vibe and pastries that are mamash gevaldig.
