From the outside, it doesn't even look like there should be a restaurant here. Sit down on the quiet, almost intimate environment, however, and get treated to authentic Japanese cuisine at its best. Omikaze does not come inexpensively here, but worth the price: simple, beautiful, and without gimmicks. A favorite on a cold night, the ramen is a big, hot, savory bowl of wonderfulness that is hard to equal.

Pros:
Best sushi I've ever had. Everything was fresher and more tender tasting than other restaurants in central NJ. The selection of fish and miscellaneous sea based critters is vast. First time trying sea urchin and monkfish liver. Did not disappoint. The omakase style was cool.
Cons:
Expensive af. The people sitting near us were snobby, but those are the type of people that go to expensive restaurants.

This is a hidden gem! It's a tiny place with a small parking lot and if I hadn't used my GPS I would have passed right by. I'm glad I didn't, the sushi was delicious and the atmosphere was calm and friendly. Great food!

I often come here for their omakase for special occasions and wanted to reinforce my high opinion of Ai through reviews. However, I saw a few bad reviews and that broke my heart. Ai truly upholds the highest quality sushi. Some things to note: if you don't care all that much about quality of fish, don't go here, you'll just end up complaining that it's too expensive (its not at all for the quality) Additionally, note that this is a no frills omakase experience, don't expect some fancy up the butt service. If they forget to tell you what fish it is, just ask the waitress (I care more about the food than I do the service if you haven't figured) Though, I will say, all the times I've been there, the service has been great. For some background (and perhaps credibility on my taste) I'm an avid sushi enjoyer and by avid I mean I've tried my fair share of high end omakase experiences (Noz included). I've also been to Japan and tried the fresh sushi there. All that being said, trust me when I say this is THE best value omakase you'll find.

This is the best sushi in New Jersey. It is as similar to eating sushi in Japan as you can get locally in NJ in terms of types of sushi and variation of fish. If you like “insert your towns name” crazy roll covered in mayonnaise this is not the place for you. If you want a perfect piece of barracuda (they have all the regular fish too, salmon, tuna etc) on top of rice this is the spot.
All of their fish shines and that’s why you go there. They also serve fish in season (follow their instagram) and new fish pops up on the menu all the time. Chef is amazing and we absolutely love the service. We literally don’t go anywhere but here.

1st, I don’t understand all the positive reviews - friends of the owners??
Don’t believe them. We have tried all the sushi places in the area and have been eating sushi weekly for years - as someone pointed out, there’s a reason the place was empty. The fish had more personality than the chef. He didn’t even tell us what he was giving us. When we asked, he wasn’t audible!
Most of the sushi/sashimi was “fishy” - anything too fishy, he put sea salt on it to try and hide the fishiness and also destroying the flavor of the fish. It was like eating a handful of sea salt.
At $125 per person for the omakase - it’s a complete rip off.
A Thursday night and we were the only ones there the entire night.
Go to Asahi in Morristown for the best sushi in the area and if you just want a great salmon dish - get the salmon lover at Tsuru.
