Amazing. Absolutely amazing. We love sushi, but this place blew us away. I was not expecting the quality of food that we experienced. It was just that--an experience. Apart from being amazingly fresh, they also just seemed to have great pairings. Garlic, ginger, citron, all sorts of things which were added in just the right amounts to add and elevate the piece, but not overpower the simplicity and freshness.
Really, really awesome. Worth a trip!!

First time here, and wow!
Now, I don't need to go into NYC for fresh sashimi/sushi. When I get my craving for authentic opulent quality raw fish, I'll come here where it's much closer to home!
Yes, it's not cheap, but you get what you pay for, and it's totally worth it for me.

Delicious omakase. My husband and I each had the 12 piece omakase. Each piece was fresh and delicious. I don’t eat beef so the sushi chef gladly replaced the wagyu for another piece of fish for me. We enjoyed it so much, we each added two additional pieces at the end a la carte. I especially enjoyed the seared toro. If you like omakase, try Umai, it’s worth the hype.

Loved it! Sat at the sushi bar for omakase. From the moment we entered, we felt welcomed by the staff. Every piece of the 12-piece omakase was delicious and we each added 2 more of our favorite pieces at the end. The Akima and Seared Toro were two of our favorites. We also ordered sake from the provided sake delivery menu. Can’t wait to go back!

Amazing. Amazing. You know, the omakase was outstanding, but the 1 thing that puts this place over the top, was being able to talk with Alan. Everyone sees the successes, but rarely do you understand the immense amount of increase sweat capital that is put into a business. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to enjoy the food and the company. A birthday to never forget!

Amazing experience, everything we ate was delicious, the chef was excellent and the owner is such a nice guy, who will explain everything to you with a bit of personal flare.
We will definitely be back again.

Another outstanding omakase at Allen’s cozy place. Highest quality, great value. I can’t think of a place in the area I like more.

The Omakase was excellent, the best we've experienced in NJ. The website says the fish is flown in daily from Japan, and it sure tasted better than the fish from any other local sushi place. The service was also great. The place is small, nice, but nothing fancy -- so don't expect much along those lines. It is expensive, but worth the treat, in my opinion. Highly recommended

We were really excited to try out the Omakase experience here. Unfortunately, we were told that they ONLY serve the Omakase menu at the sushi bar which is high and requires you to sit on a stool. Because my wife is paralyzed and unable to get out of her wheelchair, they told her they would be unable to accommodate us, and they refused to serve the Omakase menu at a low top.
I'd recommend Google take down the "accessible" icon for this business. While you can get in the door, those in wheelchairs are ostensibly not allowed to enjoy the same menu that able bodied customers are.

Quality and grade of sushi was very good. However, for the price of omakase I expected the chef to cut the fish during omakase service and not prior - everything was presliced which is a No-No for omakase. Also, the chef doesn't tell you anything about the fish other than what they are which you can read on the board. For a no frills venue in a tiny mart stop the price is too high considering the location and it's a byob. Disappointing!

This was our first time at Umai. They serve a fantastic omakase that slowly builds on the taste and culminates with amazing combinations that are sweet and spicy and delicate at the same time.
Another thing to note is that they have the 12 piece and the 18 piece omakase options. They themselves recommended that we start with 12 and decide if we want to go to 18 once we are at that point. We were pleasantly surprised by them not pushing the more expensive option.
We will definitely come again and will recommend them to our friends.
