Okay, so my buddy mentioned this place to me and I've been trying to drink a beer and eat the food here for two years but every time I had the chance to stop here I would but it was on the day it's closed . So today it was opened and I stopped at this place to drink a beer and eat some food. So I walk in and the bar was full so I sat at a table , while I was sitting at the table the female bartender saw me twice as she was behind the bar getting drinks for the people that were already there but never said to me give me a minute and I'll be right with you , so I sat there wondering am I supposed to go to the bar place order or just wait at my table . Well after about 5-15 minutes she came by and asked what I wanted to drink and if I was wanting to order food so I said yes I would like a Budweiser and I would like to eat . She brought me my beer and a menu, I ordered, but it seemed she had a bit of a attitude. Well I got my beer and then my food came a little bit later I sat there ate my food and drank my beer after being there an hour and as she passed by me to tend to the regulars that go there she never asked how was my food or if I needed another beer and yes my beer was empty as I was eating. So now let me say this , 4 ladies came in sat at the table next me and two went up to the bar to ask the bartender something and the bartender replied back in a loud tone I WILL BRING YOU MENUS TO YOUR TABLE as if she didn't like them two ladies going up to the bar to ask her ( well I'm glad I didn't go up to the bar like I was thinking of doing) I thought that was very rude of her to say and talk to them ladies like that in front of everyone else in there , I can imagine how them ladies felt and the embarrassment. I usually tip very good but today I didn't, my bill was $17.72 , I left a $20.00 bill plus a $1.00 bill , so the tip was $2.00 for the great red enchiladas $1.00 for the Budweiser and coin change for the bartender that didn't do a good job !! I felt so unwelcome and so disappointed in the establishment, after my friend bragged about this place ! I was in the parking lot of La Posta restaurant up the road in LA Messila And I decided to go this place , I sure do regret not staying at La Posta and eating and drinking there !! To the management or owner of this Chopes restaurant you need to tell and teach the people that work for you to make everyone feel welcome in your little bar and restaurant and to be more attentive to all your customers especially that little black haired red lipstick eye glasses wearing female bartender that was working in there today !! I probably will not be back in this place and leave my hard earned money , to the public that reads this do not stop here but I really recommend La Posta in LA Messila New Mexico !!!!

I liked it, but I was expecting more because of the " hype" it's more Mexican than New Mexican, so a lot is personal preference. Great salsa

This is one-of-a-kind excellence! Go in and make some friends, eat some out-of-this-world New Mexican food, and drink some inexpensive beers. Everyone who's lived in Cruces misses Chope's when they move away. It's open again and better than ever. Wear your big kid pants and bring your taste for real New Mexican food.

Wonderful food and great service. Not a whole lot of atmosphere, but their focus is on the food.

I happen to pawn this age old family style restaurant while traveling through New Mexico. It's just so happened. We visited during taco Thursday. Being in native Arizona and I've never seen red chili or green chili tacos. Of course I had to try them and they were wonderful love the red chili.Chile rellano and tamales are small, but very tasty and two thumbs up.

Still can't figure out why people like this place. Last time we went there was about five years ago, didn't care much for the food back then, so never went back. We live in La Mesa and today decided to go have lunch somewhere, We figured we would give Chopes a try again. The food was still very disappointing. Had a combination plate with tacos, green enchiladas and a relleno. The tacos were average, the green chili on the enchiladas tasted like it came from a can and the relleno was so eggie and just didn't have much flavor. While sitting there I looked at my husband and said "I still don't get it". I guess because it's old and iconic people like it.
