Any stop in Barrington Passage must include a visit to JB’s Steak & Seafood Restaurant! I initially went because the online reviews of the food were enticing. Once there, I was moved to discover that this woman-owned business is staffed by family members who are keeping alive the legacy of a Miss Ally fisherman, lost to the sea in a 2013 tragedy that claimed five young men from this area. Two things to love about the Maritimes are the fresh seafood (simply cooked, and bursting with flavour) and the friendly locals (in my opinion, Maritimers are the most genuine people in Canada). You will get both of these in abundance at JB’s Steak & Seafood Restaurant.

JB’s Steak and Seafood Restaurant is rated as top restaurant in Barrington Passage on Tripadvisor, so we thought this would be a good pick! We were looking forward to a really nice meal but when we saw the outside, we were taken aback, but went in anyway and the place is more like a tired (run down?) dinner. Our biggest surprise is that there are no steaks there, except for an open faced Philly cheesesteak that they call a steak sandwich with fries. So don’t expect to have steak in this Steak and Seafood restaurant! What you will get is a lot of dinner food with fries. Everything pretty much is served with fries. No fresh fish either. I had the scallops & fries and while the fries were great, the scallops tasted fishy and overcooked - old and rubbery. It came with a plastic cup of mushy coleslaw and a bland tartar sauce, probably from a store bought jar, also served in a plastic container. Hubby had a hot chicken sandwich (and fries of course!) and it was more of the same. Although an attempt at flavouring the dish was made with a dash of dried up parsley on top of the gravy, to no avail, it remained bland. My poor husband also had to spit out an inch long chicken bone! It came with a small package of cranberry jelly, the type you get at takeout with peel off top as well as more of the mushy. Good portions for the price, so if you just want to have a big meal for cheap, then that’s the place for you.

We stopped here on one of our first Barrington visits. Family recommended it. It was busy, and I take that as a good sign. The battered haddock was absolutely amazing. Delicious and incredibly fresh. Good fries, too. Excellent coleslaw. Great coffee. The only thing that really disappointed us (and the reason for not giving 5 stars) was the fact we paid $6.50 for a Budweiser. Ouch. Besides that, everything was great.

We enjoyed the chowder. It was good , but nothing I need to go back again for. The potatoes skins have fake bacon on them . I sent those back and got a sandwich instead. The waitress was friendly and happy to trade out my fake bacon potatoes for something else . I'm probably not the first to complain about it .

Driving from Halifax to Yarmouth and found this HIDDEN GEM on the east shore of the peninsula. Literally the BEST tasting Chinese cuisine I have ever had on the southwest end of the province. Definitely come for the food and service!!!

We ate there last week and ordered the seafood platter. It was plentiful and oh so delicious. We each ordered the small platter and could not clean our plates--well, all the seafood was devoured. In fact, we enjoyed it so much, we went back again the next night and ordered the same thing. The staff was very friendly and the service was great. This is a must to visit if you are in the area.

Food is pretty satisfying. Surely don’t come for the service!!!! We were frozen and when I tried to get someone’s attention to maybe turn up the heat. I was met with major attitude. Also asked about general tao sauce and was told that’s an exclusive for the buffet that was starting 2 hour after we arrived. Cool, except she was bringing that food out while I was there and still I was refused to buy any for my meal. Such a disappointment.
