Legit Japanese joint. From the menu to the staff and the way they treat you to the food itself, this place deserves its excellent reputation. Our servers were so pleasant and friendly at all times, the drinks were good (especially for the price) and the food was exceptional. We ordered the agedashi tofu and karaage chicken as appetizers and I think the karaage was in the top 5 I’ve ever had, including in Japan and among the many Japanese restaurants in the SF Bay Area. Seriously, it’s worth going for that alone. We also ordered some botan ebi with the fried heads, a pretty rare treat, and they were delicious. The heads were fried perfectly and were soooo good. For the main event, my companion got a roll with eel in it (meh, not my thing, but he loved it) and I got the large omakase sashimi. The selection of fish was seriously excellent and on par with what you would expect to find at higher end Japanese restaurants. It was an excellent value for the money considering the cuts of fish. The fatty tuna was absolutely amazing. I’m going back to this place ASAP.

Take out for four, but only four packets of soy sauce… I maybe should have asked in retrospect. Sushi is tasty but rolls are smaller than other spots.
I kept saying to my husband, “I think this is some of the best sushi I’ve ever had.” This place was bustling and busy from the second we entered till the second we left, but the staff were so kind to each person throughout it all! We had the chicken karage and some rolls. The fish was so fresh, the avocado clearly used at the perfect time and the sushi rice was my favourite part. Can’t get over how incredible it was. We will be back soon!

Overall it was tasty—I especially loved the rice—but the presentation wasn’t quite what I expected from a Japanese restaurant with such a long heritage

Great.
I'm allergic to fish, so I generally avoid sushi. I ordered their japanese curry w/ chicken and absolutely loved it. In fact, I came back the next day to order it again.

I'm leaving this review in the hope that they improve their dine-in service. We have been ordering take-out from Doraku since they first opened. We have always had good food and good service. Tonight, we ate in for the first time. We sat on the patio. The servers rarely came out. We had to walk inside ask for water, cutlery, and dishes for soy sauce. We also had to ask for the correct number of plates and I ended up walking over and getting my own chopsticks. The food was mostly good but some of the maki was falling apart and the roll we ordered with spicy mayo on the side did not come with spicy mayo on the side. I had to hand the servers our empty dishes, otherwise I doubt they would have cleared them.
This restaurant appears to prioritize take-out customers, and maybe people who eat inside. If they are going to offer table service, including a patio, they need to provide better service. This is particularly so considering the premium price they charge. I seriously doubt I will eat there again, take-out or otherwise.
