What a hidden gem! This cheerful little spot has a delightful menu. The selection of Octoberfest food is great. Steaming bowls of Goulash with delicious bread and bowls of warm red cabbage made for a wonderful evening dinner. Cafe lights and a setting sun added to the ambience. Fresh, local and friendly!!!

Great restaurant on the way from Mahone Bay to Lunenburg. The food and service was exceptional! If you're looking for a German affair along this side of the town this is the right place. They're only open from 4pm-8pm so reservations are ideal. Their menu is concise but they also have a lot of vegan and gluten free options on their menu. The Jager schnitzel and vegan Bratwurst are really good.

Wanted to go for a long time, but couldn't make a reservation. This time we just stopped in and they had a table.

Disappointed. Food came within 10 minutes which means it is not freshly prepared. We were hoping for a German restaurant experience but sadly got the fast food experience. Staff was very friendly. Food is overpriced.

Delightful little restaurant with a unique offering of German dishes. Decided on having the chicken schnitzel with spatzle as I was not terribly familiar with either. It hit the spot! Would definitely recommend this place!

We were not satisfied with the service we received with our meal. Our entree came with very little gravy. When we asked for more gravy, we were not informed there would be an extra charge of $5.00 for maybe 2 ounces of gravy. The salad (if you want to call it a salad) was skimpy to say the least with very little cucumber dressing. We were very disappointed and will not be returning. It is not what we remembered from the Old Black Forest Restaurant before it changed ownership. VERY DISAPPOINTING DINING EXPERIENCE!

Very disappointed with our dinner out with friends this past weekend. Pre-Covid, we ate regularly at the Old Black Forest restaurant, and the food was excellent and the portions were large. The menu now is quite short and the portions are extremely small. I had a 4” piece of bratwurst on gluggy and unseasoned mashed potato (was it made from instant potato mix?) with four very thin wedges of apple and a couple of spoonfuls of unseasoned and tasteless spaetlze. For $20++. And your Black Forest cake is very dry and unpleasant.I fully understand the pressures that restaurants are under with the high costs of labour and escalating food prices. The cooks here could serve much larger portions of very tasty German cabbage, real mashed potatoes and meat options using large pork neck and/or shoulders etc sourced at very reasonable prices that offer good margins for experienced and skillful food managers. It’s my guess that the new owners are perhaps not experienced. Perhaps they’ve lost the passion for German food. Perhaps they’re burnt out? It’s quite unfortunate because German food done well has quite a broad appeal. There’s a certain lethargy and lack of interest here in serving delightful traditional German food. With better training and skill, preparing and serving great food doesn’t have to cost a lot. Traditional red cabbage dishes are quite special. The chefs could easily serve the entire restaurant’s nightly portions for under $20 all in. How much does a 50 pound bag of potatoes cost wholesale? That’s enough to last a week. Or pork roasts carved with skill, resulting in good margins and satisfied diners. Sorry, my friends, but a dinner for two costing over $100 for unseasoned tasteless food prepared badly is certainly not going to bring us back anytime in the future.

Although under new ownership, food is still excellent. The pretzel was very good, but I do not recommend the mustard unless you like very spicy food, then it would be an excellent choice. They have a reduced menu but the food is still very good. Whatever they are paying their waitress it is not enough. She was excellent, she could teach a class on how waitresses should be. Overall, excellent food and fantastic atmosphere.
