Big mistake not stopping by The Star for a seriously awesome steak/place, it is a true gem of Elko. Make sure you show up hungry
The food is so bad and it’s sooo expensive it’s hilarious that this is considered “fancy”.
-the “steak sandwich” is literally just a steak between 2 pieces of bread
-the beans, green beans, and pasta that come with entrees are just canned/premade and flavorless
-the mac n cheese is a generous portion of Kraft
-the bread pudding is horrible unless you like soggy bread sitting in a massive puddle of butter with a shot of alcohol over it
-the “flan” is not sweet or custardy it’s like a fried egg patty and burnt on the bottom
I’m pretty sure that we could have made a better dinner at home fairly easily for just the price of the crab alone ($86 for 1lb)
Service was great though, servers were kind and attentive and did warn us about the Mac n cheese.
It's not a hotel it's a restaurant. Meals served family style with multiples courses of sides, you just choose the main dish. I couldn't recommend the experience highly enough. Their steaks are huge. The staff appears to be family and they throw down a mean spread as fast as you can put it away. Very good price for how much and what you get. We will be back.
We went only to the restaurant for a business dinner. Did not stay at the hotel.
The service was excellent as was the atmosphere. The portions were large. All the sides were delicious. We ordered steaks, and honestly they really lacked flavor. That was the only disappointment of the evening, the main course.
Food was excellent. Filet I had was perfect not to mention all sides.
This is a yearly spot I never miss! The only reason I don't come not often is because I live 700 miles away, but without a doubt I'm stopping here every time I'm in Elko! Myself and a crew I work with come every year and it's easily our favorite meal, maybe of the whole year!!
I am big fan of Basque restaurants (I have a little bit of Basque heritage) and the Star Hotel has been on my list of top Basque restaurants to visit in the West. My wife and I had an opportunity to eat dinner at the Star Hotel during a recent stopover in Elko. The place has a historic vibe where locals frequent. Driving around looking for parking, a legal brothel on the next block reminds you that you are in the Old West. We arrived at the restaurant on a Saturday at 5PM and the bar area was packed, but we were quickly seated. Within 45 minutes, the dining room was packed. The service staff was great and very friendly. I would give the service a 10/10. The menu is typical Basque, with a ton of food included with every entree. Our courses included soup, bread, salad, sauteed beans, green beans, spaghetti, and French fries. Unfortunately, I would give the food a 6/10. My steak was great and the cabbage soup was pretty good. The salad was good, but plain. The green beans looked like they came directly from a can. The spaghetti was overcooked with a very watery sauce. The French fries were over cooked and they tasted like the cooking oil hadn't been changed for a while. I am glad that I visited the historic Star Hotel and had a Basque dinner that night, but was disappointed in the food. The Basque food at Louis's Basque corner in Reno and the Wool Growers in Bakersfield is honestly much better. Will I return? Probably yes, because the service and friendliness was awesome and I love the historic vibe and the family style dinners.
Compared to other Basque restaurants I've been to it was pretty similar. However the spaghetti was bland like straight up tasted like chef boyardee bland. The lamb was really good and the salad was good too. The beans were ok nothing special and the fries were reasonable. They make an ok picon punch but no complementary wine which is normal at Basque restaurants. But whatever people have told me a million times to eat here and I finally did but yeah it was overall meh
Authentic Basque food, with history and tradition and excellent staff. The food is delicious!!!! I will definitely be back as we travel this way quite often.
Great food and atmosphere, excellent place for a family dinner. Highly recommend the bacon wrapped dates.
Restaurantji Recommends
Hands down the absolute best food in Elko. We have tried many things on the menu and have not been disappointed yet. The service is second to none and very quick.
This is a classic for this style of dining
So much food! Great prices, kid friendly. Locals' fav place.
Hands down, the best restaurant! And, I don't mean the best restraunt in Elko, or the best restaurant in Nevada...I mean it is the best restaurant ever! The best steaks, lamb, salad, soup....everything really! I can't recommend The Star enough and I tell everyone about it!
Great food!
