This place is an area staple, and consistently provides a good atmosphere for American dining. Steaks are recommended, as this is all I have personally ever ordered here. They have always been excellent. My most recent visit was with a group of six, and feedback from others who ordered other type items, complained about them tasting warmed over, rather than fresh. The servers are exceptional, and appear to show a genuine interest in their patrons.

We were a large party of 18 and we were amazed at the efficiency of our server as he took and delivered our orders. The menu is fairly large and the price fixed section contains lots of options so it would have been easy to make mistakes but there were none. Portions are generous and the food was done exactly as ordered. We were more than happy with our meals.

Everything is always delicious here. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. I've been coming here since they opened and I've not once ever been served something I didn't like.

The J & R Steakhouse in Calverton has been the proverbial "go-to" restaurant for my wife and me for years now. The prime rib and steak dinners cannot be matched; everything else we have sampled there is done perfectly. How is it possible-in this day on Long Island- for a couple to sit down to a dinner on a Saturday evening , order two four to five course pre-fix dinners including the huge porterhouse steak and barbecued beef ribs, and a bottle of Merlot for $89? All this in very pleasant surroundings with personable staff!

J & R's steakhouse is really a hidden gem. The restaurant has a very old timey log cabin feel. It's really comfortable. The portions are all huge and delicious. Whether you get the marinated bacon cheeseburger or ribs or a steak, you can't go wrong. They give you pickles and macaroni salad the moment you sit down. The prices are very good and way better than anything out east for a similar experience. Overall, this place is a hit in my book.

Food was great, great atmosphere and the service was top notch from reception to food server. Went there in the afternoon around 2pm and it was packed, didn't waite long to be seated. Great prices for a steakhouse, I had the prime rib and it was fantastic. A definite try if your in the area.

The front desk was very welcoming. The macaroni salad was scrumptious minus the pickle. I ordered the baked clams which were in my opinion way too mushy. I I ordered something with an S, that stated cabbage and dumplings. I asked the waitress if this was a dumpling dish and she said yes. Instead it was a plate with meat. I didn't complain because I was just too tired. It was part of the lunch special with included soup and dessert. I had the french onion soup which was very hearty and filling. I think the service of the waitress could of had more gusto to its service as it was very blase.. not the greatest service with informing a dish is something else when it was different (plus pretend you like your job just a little) and the baked clams could use some love in it's recipe. The place is very quaint with an old school feel.

Best steak house that I ate ever. The steak tasted like real steak and the french fries were really good.

J and R steakhouse in Calverton has been a family staple for years if not decades. We have not visited since the pandemic and our recent experience was a mixed bag. I would have given less than 3 stars but I wanted to be gracious and perhaps based my opinion on fond memories. We sat outside and cannot complain about the scenic landscape, it was beautiful and the server was amazing. However, especially based on past experience, the food (even for comfort food) was mediocre at best... both in presentation and in preparation. As far as my family and I are concerned.. while the menu certainly suffices, again for a comfort food menu, it could use some improvements and the food needs to be elevated and taken to the next level. This next point is probably my fault, but I ordered a mushroom Burger thinking I would get a portobello Burger on a bun but was served a very dry looking hamburger with mushroom and onion slices and I haven't eaten meat in 30 years but I guess an authentic mushroom Burger is simply not one of the selections and it should be. What we were served was was akin to what you'd expect to be served at a diner, Denny's or at a Ponderosa from days gone by... not from a well known restaurant on Long Island's much acclaimed east end... especially not for the prices... We are willing to pay more provided we get more and our experience is commensurate with what we are being charged.p

We arrived at 6:00 and didnt finish until 8:30. The service was horrible and the food sucked. It literally took 1.5 hours to get our food and when we did get it the food was overcooked, dry and cold. My son wanted ice cream and by the time we got that it was melted. We ended up leaving before the check came. My inlaws are currently waiting for it. We forgot our babys bottle at the table. By the time we got 3 kids loaded into the car and went back to get the bottle, 20 minutes, the check still had not come. My inlaws will probably wait another hour to pay. Ill never eat here again. Its horrible.

Time to give my review, and I'm gonna be brutal. I've been to this restaurant location twice before and it was great but after last night's visit I'm not coming back. I arrived here at 8:24pm last night with my wife and in-laws. When we reached the front desk, we were given the most unwelcome face by an older blonde woman. Like she looked like she wanted to bash a stool on my sister in laws head. She never welcomed us or anything, she angrily grabbed four menus and made us follow her. As we walk towards the dining area a male waiter is standing nearby and my sister in law greets him, he responds with "welcome, doubt there's any food left but oh well" under his breath. I saw what time they were closing and it said 9:30pm. I looked at my watch and it was 8:30. Clearly these employees are pissed off because they want to go home already. It's Saturday evening on Labor Day weekend, why are they refusing to stay open like their two other locations??? It's gonna be a busy weekend!!! But anyway we ended up with the most obnoxious waitress who sped through each of our orders without allowing us to request anything, she just didn't want to deal with us. I don't appreciate being treated like we were an inconvenience even though we were respectful. You guys are finished

I used to love eating at J&R,I went yesterday for my lunch and I ordered a Prime rib special and a full rack of baby back ribs to go.Well, the portions are half of what they used to be, now they charge you for bread and they charge you for dessert when actually the menu says it included with tea or coffee, they wanted $8 for a tiny piece of cheesecake, hell no !The steak wasn’t great, it was like prior boiled and then roasted , not to mention the small size. The old full rack of ribs that I used to order, actually is now like half rack of ribs and dry, not fall from the bone, and just bare bone with no meat.Disappointed big time, will not return.I ate better 2 weeks ago at the Texas Roadhouse in Selden.

Sat outside on the back patio. Beautiful night and delish meal. My husband had rare prime rib and I had the bacon cheddar cheese burger. Prime rib was cooked perfect (or really not cooked perfect since it was rare!). 2 meals, apps and 2 drinks all under $80.

We sat at the bar and ordered filet mignon with creamed spinach. The creamed spinach was fantastic... clearly it was made there. The filet was delish as well. Their prices are fair. The bartender was not attentive, and our food was pretty late coming out - 45 minutes after we ordered.
