Beverages are expensive compared to previous visits. I spent 18 dollars on a beer and 1 shot. Was extremely over charged when running a tab, assuming they lost track and charged me for other people's drinks. I wouldn't suggest paying with card or having the bartender put you on a tab. The food was not even worth the wait or money. Tasteless and dry. Good atmosphere and energy regardless, however if you don't have a good amount of cash on hand, this isn't the bar to go to.
The Palm Gardens has been in Cortland since before I was born and I'm an OLD man. It was my family's Friday Fish Fry place in the '60s, and I surely have not been there since 1970 or so. In a discussion of good Friday Fish Fries, I mentioned the Palm Gardens, and did not even know if it was still open. One phone call later, YES it was, and YES, they still did Fish Fry. We took a road trip today. OK, Tom Wolf was partly right, you can't go home again. But he missed the fact that you can get close sometimes. The Interior artwork was gone, painted over 15 years ago, according to the owner, it was too far gone to save. The restaurant back room had two pool tables but still eight or ten dining tables, we found space for our two couples easily. Service is FRIENDLY, Fast and Excellent. The owner - bar tender - cook does it all, and she is GOOD. The menu has a front page of assorted appetizers and small dishes, we all zeroed in on the fish on the bottom of the back of the menu. Fresh haddock fish fry, with coleslaw, and your choice of fries or house made Mac & Cheese. OR, Fresh perch with the same choices. Two of us went for Haddock, two went for Perch (which come from Skaneatlas Lake and really are FRESH) , with two Mac & Cheese, an order of Fries and a double slaw. Oh, and the Fried Shrimp Appetizer. I ordered a double to share on the table and those shrimp were PERFECT! Crispy fried crust, tender and moist inside, with a properly tangy cocktail sauce. I was transported back 60+ years, as my go-to as a kid was the Fried Shrimp dinner. You can get darn close to home. One Manhattan, two diet colas and a Genny draft (ok, when I was there as a kid I did NOT get a beer ? ). My friends, who accompanied us, were amazed. They live 10 minutes away and had never tried Palm Gardens. They will return and we will too. Friendly people, good food and great value. Our dinners for four, with appetizers and drinks was less than a recent dinner for two, with the same fish, and apps. Don't let your initial impression OR some unfavorable reviews scare you away.
