Very cozy restaurant! Food overall was yummy and had large portion sizes
- Stinky tofu: 8/10, first time having this. Texture was so airy and soft! Sauce was good. Wish there was more flavor or salt to the actual tofu. Def strong smell. The pickled cabbage it came w was very yummy
- Sautéed cabbage: 7/10, standard
- Sweet and sour pork chop: 10/10, crispy and loved the sauce
- Oyster pancake: 10/10, first time having this. Very chewy, and lots of oysters!! Sauce was good

Queens doesn’t chase food trends. It creates them.
Before Taiwanese food was “cool,” before the hype spots and influencer noodle pulls, Taiwanese Gourmet in Elmhurst was already putting in work. 40+ years deep. No gimmicks. No attitude. Just straight-up bangers.
Green awning, red lanterns, fish tank, and what looks like straw armor on the wall (turns out it’s old-school rain gear — respect 🫡). This place is built like a food dojo.
Ordered like men who feared nothing: sausage with raw garlic (don’t ask, just do it), pork rolls that taste like childhood joy, stinky tofu that’s way less scary than its name, and a Taiwanese meatball that looks like it came from another dimension but absolutely slaps.
Then the closer: three-cup chicken. Dark, glossy, basil-packed, cooked like it’s someone’s grandmother judging you from the kitchen. Unreal.
Yes, also picked ordered their famous beef noodle soup. Solid. It was spicy and flavorful. Very Comforting. But the real flex here is the old-school menu — dishes you don’t see on TikTok, made the way they’ve always been.
Lesson of the day: trends come and go. Real spots stay dangerous. Taiwanese Gourmet is still swinging.

The food was good! I wish the stinky tofu was stinkier though.

Went for the first time, overall experience and food were okay. I ordered braised pork over rice. It was okay, was expecting more sour taste of the preserved vegetables. the braised pork was too sweet to my taste. The place is cash only, make sure to bring cash before getting a table. Went before lunch time and when we were about to finish the waitress put the bill on the table before asking for it. There was a line when we finished our brunch. Thank goodness we went at the right time for brunch. They also have a parking lot in the back, which we found out after we paid parking on the street.

Maybe my expectation is too high but i think it’s ok
Ordered a few highly hyped dishes on red note
- kidney slice with green onion: 葱爆腰花
- chicken 三杯鸡
- chive with beef
All taste very similar and not one dish like “wow” me

I'm not a Taiwanese food connoisseur but what I know is tasty food, and their shredded beef with scallion with a tad of spicy peppers is just amazing. Highly recommended!. I try to eat this particular dish everytime I'm around Elmhurst. Try it, you won't be disappointed.
Edit after a few years:
The shredded beef with scallions is still amazing. Try it!
Also make sure you try their three cup chicken and crispy fried chicken. Delicious!
Cash only!
Ps: The owner's son needs to watch his attitude and be nicer to his customers.

Authentic Taiwanese fried pork chop and stinky tofu. It really hit the spot. I was surprised the rice dish didn’t come with an egg…. but still good.

The restaurant delivers a complete experience without gaps. The food at Taiwanese Gourmet makes me want to return quickly. The people working here have great attitudes. Staff members exceeded expectations and the place sits in an ideal area. I wish them continued operations.

Everything we got tasted just okay if not a bit on the bland and slightly sweet side, even though they were savory dishes. The service was minimal. Overall I was just disappointed because I was really looking forward to this place.

My mom and I have come to this place and ordered 3 cup chicken, oyster pancake, fried pork chop, stinky tofu, and many others. The food is wonderful, and the service is fantastic. The atmosphere was there were many people in there, and many others.

The place is crowded, the seat is limited, and they don't take reservations.
They failed to notify me that one of my dishes wasn't available, and when I tried to make a follow-up order, I was again ignored multiple times.
Finally, the owner/waitress came out to confront me about why there isn't at least a 20% tip on the table 🤦♂️
Overall the experience is extremely uncomfortable and unwelcome. As a Taiwanese who misses his home dish, this is disappointing.
