Super yummy ice cream. They seem to be famous for their pies, but the summer weather was favorable for a good cone of ice cream. If you’re in town I would suggest trying this coffee shop.

Kim makes the most delicious tomato soup that I have ever tasted. What a treat.

Amazing food! All homemade. Excellent place to gather or grab a bite on the way to the ferry.

Wonderful ice cream!
Wonderful owner! We were just there to catch a ferry...wished we could have chatted longer 🙂

This place deserves 10 stars under the new owner!
We stopped here while biking the Empire State Trail and were welcomed like family. The owner greeted us with a big smile, and she personally bakes and cooks everything on the menu. The food is incredibly fresh, and the flavors are perfectly balanced.

Her baked goods are outstanding—we tried the carrot muffins, scones, and cheesecake, all of which were delicious. For lunch, we had soups and pies that were just as amazing. Prices are very reasonable, which makes the experience even better.

I highly recommend her homemade food and desserts. My only suggestion would be to highlight her own cooking and baking in the name of the place, since the ice cream is Hershey’s, while her creations are truly the star.

The location is also perfect—right near the ferry and a great stop along the trail.

Came here in the morning on our bike tour along the Empire State Trail, lured by reviews talking about hand pies. They did not disappoint. Despite being swamped by hungry cyclists and other patrons, the staff were courteous and quick to get food packed, heated, and drinks served.

Coffee was hot and delicious. Hand pies were savory. I even bought some coffee cake to go and enjoyed it later in the day.

What a great find! I wish I lived closer and could stop in more often. Delicious house-made hand pies, soups, and cake! The owner, Kim, is a whirlwind of energy and wants only to please. Whipped up a gluten-free concoction in a second, along with beef hand pie and yummy chocolate cake that was out of this world. Love love love the Essex Ice Cream Cafe!

Ownership of this place has exchanged hands a handful of times in the past 5 years. That said, current owner I think has taken the best/perfect balance/approach, and is doing a great job 🤗. Great espresso coffee as a treat (versus your typical everyday drip coffee at gas station - she has both + tea though 👍🏼), a great selection of homemade meals and desserts, cute artisan goods, groceries, frozen foods, ice cream, and much more.

My one reccomendation as to why 4/5 and not 5/5, is I wish this place was open before 11am Mon - Fri for coffee/tea/breakfast. That is when most people have coffee ~ 7 - 9am. It’s always been this way throughout the many owners, never understood why, perhaps lack of demand from locals and/or ferry travelers. Otherwise love this place! One of our favorite spots this side of Lake Champlain.

My wife and I took a ride on the Essex - Charlotte Ferry lake Champlain. We had time to explore and wanted to see the New York side. The Essex side is a small town that is small and interesting. We were interested to something to eat and found an Ice Cream shop but we really wanted something different like a breakfast or pastery so we stopped in and got 2 coffees and piece of coffee cake. Went out front to enjoy the day and what a day it was. We discovered a Ice Cream place, Lunchenet, breakfast place, coffee shop all rolled up in one. Both selections were absolutly great.

Just about when we were done a woman leans out the front door to ask how we were and how was the service. Could not ask for better. Got talking and asked why some really poor reviews and everything was so goog and the interior is set up so well. Apparently the previous owners almost went out of there way to ruin be jerks.

This is a jewel of a find stop in and grab a Hand Pie it is great vesion of a meat sandwich.

The curry chicken hand pies were tasty and exactly what we needed on our bike ride before catching the ferry.
