excellent experience / service/ makgeolli . The owners are really nice , the fresh eel that we have tried and the different sidedishes are very interesting . Off the beaten track location , but every time we have a consistently good experience. No frills dining room , nice location

We came here on a Friday evening. We loved all the food & the owner was so nice. The eel with sauce was so good that I didn't get a picture.

This was such a hidden gem that our family discovered during a trip to the Catskills area. About 20 minutes away from Kartrite, and absolutely worth the drive if you’re looking for authentic Korean food. It’s a small menu, but very special because the couple owns one of the only for eel fishing licenses in the state of NY. I’ve had plenty of eel before prepared in sushi, but never had freshwater eel grilled like this! I was so pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Fresh, mild flavor, and the grilled texture was perfect with a little char. My two young daughters also really liked it. It was especially good eaten in a ssam wrap. All the kkaenip and banchan were vegetables from their garden, fresh and delicious. The other dish we ordered was the dakdoritang. When he brought it out, he had mentioned that the chicken meat may be a bit more tough than what we are used to because it’s from the chickens they have in the back! It was indeed different than the GMO chicken we see often that’s plump full of whole knows what, but it definitely was more tasty. Nice and spicy, good contrast with the potatoes and carrots, and the stew was delicious over rice. Again, my girls loved the dish and asked for more rice to have with the soup.

But wait, there’s more that makes this place so memorable! They make their own makgeolli and sell in bottles with no preservatives. It’s soooo much better than what you find commercially in grocery stores. It’s less sweet, no artificial sugary taste at all, more tart, and higher alcohol content. Since we had to drive back, we needed to walk off the unexpected buzz and the sweet owners graciously let us explore their property. We saw the chickens, eels, and walked to the river where the eels are caught. It was a beautiful area, especially on a warm fall day, and the whole experience was truly one to be remembered.

Highly recommend this place. It’s not big, so better for small groups. Worth traveling for though since you really can’t find a place that cooks fresh eel like this anywhere in NYC.

This is a special place. In the middle of nowhere and all of a sudden there's not just a healthy, farm to table option, but one with very tasty food as well. Lots of love goes into their food. The menu is small but all you need. You know they do the few things on the menu, well.

I had the eel and all that came with it. 10/10. I'll be back first chance to have more of that and try the rest.

The best eel gui ever in the states. Of course, you can easily find good eel places in Korea but I was never able to find one here. I finally found one, and tasted almost as same as my favorite place in Jeju. The chicken dish (we had the dakdoritang) was also very tasty as the meats were so tender and well absorbed by the seasoning. Furthermore, the chef’s banchan was just incredible. Very humble and not very special selections but very satisfying .. not overly seasoned and not salty yet you could almost taste Korea’s countryside. I would definitely bring my family and friends again. Love it!!!!

I called a week before and the morning of our arrival to reserve eels.
And then I called again 30min before.
The lady said no more eels for the day. Wtf… and we had to wait another 30min to take a table. Big let down!!!
I give 3 stars just because…I might give it another try.

I've been coming here for a long time when they were at different location long time ago. Back then, the owner gave lots of portion of chicken and rice but they really changed for the worse.

I went with about 8 group of people and we ordered 4 whole chickens. It was not 4 whole chickens. They only cook half of the portion and fill the plate with liquid. Extremely disappointed. As you can see on the picture, they give no chicken. I really hope the owner reads this and change the way they operate. Please don't go with a group of people because they will rip you off that petty. If you are going to go,just order 1 portion because whether you order 1 or 4 portions, they will use the same amount of ingredient.

Also, they give such small portion of rice. We had to literally ask them to give rice 5 times and they bring so little. If they are going to be that stingy giving free refills of rice at a korean restaurant , just charge the rice then for them to feel better.
She keeps telling us to use the liquid leftover from
the chicken and mix with rice, but makes no sense since they are too cheap to give rice anyway.
So no meat and no rice period at this place.

I won't be returning, they definitely are not what they used to be. I hope they give proper portions for the price they charge. Please reconsider coming with your significant others.

Recently stopped by here after going to Catskills and my wife loved the food there.

The restaurant is owned by this sweet couple that is very friendly.
Really authentic Korean food with perilla leave wraps and other side dishes. Vegetable and eel is farm or fresh to table. They have their own farm and lake nearby for the fresh food.

Wife is looking for opportunities to go back there again for the food even though we live 3 hours away.

Such a nice experience and delightful time we had with authentic Korean food. The owners cooked and served us and couldn't have been sweeter or more attentive. And the food was fabulous! Try the wine they make, we loved it! Not what you would expect in this area of NY but worth the trip!

The Kims host a great meal with attention to fresh produce and quality meats. Spicing is perfect. Note that the Kims personally grow their own vegetables and herbs, and fish for the eel and trout on the menu. The house-made makgeoli is smooth and refreshing. It is small batch processed and 100% of the culture is in it…not pasteurized. We will definitely be back and wish the business well! Call in advance to have them set a table for you and place your order. The food will be ready and on the table promptly.

The homemade Makgeolli(Korean traditoional rice wine)is the best among the ones I’ve tasted. The foods were made with fresh ingredients. It was great. The location was also easy to find as it was by the road.

The food was delicious as always, today they had a tasting event! We tried their Bulgogi, Japchae glass noodles, kimchi was great, everything was delicious! I really enjoyed the Makgeolli, it had a yogurty tang to it!
